When your mind gets cluttered, your words get tangled.
That’s when a pause matters most.
One breath.
One moment.
One gentle reset.
This is how you speak with clarity instead of panic.

Because a slow breath (breathe in to the count of 4, hold and breathe out to the count of 8) tells your nervous system you’re safe.
Your heart rate settles.

It’s Monday… which means one thing for most people:
your inner critic is already wide awake.

In truth, it didn’t take the weekend off.
There is no time off from that voice in your head —
the negative thoughts, the overthinking, the way you talk yourself out of things before you’ve even begun.
It’s that familiar feeling of being hard on yourself for no real reason.

It feels like a (negative) running commentary with no mute switch.

Or is there? Could there be?

When you realise that your inner critic isn’t trying to punish you — it’s trying to protect you — everything shifts.
It’s running on old survival strategies, old fears, old rules you learned long before you had any power to question them.

As I say in my book Speak Like the Leader You Are:
“The inner critic is not cruel by nature. It is protective.”

And when you understand that, you can begin to tune that voice into something far more supportive. Something calmer.
Something kinder.
Something that helps you grow instead of holding you back.

Your inner critic doesn’t need to be silenced — it needs to be understood.

Today I just want to say thank you.

To the people who’ve shared their real experiences of nerves, pressure, and those “I hope I don’t mess this up” moments in meetings with me. I know how hard it is to be honest about these things, especially when it’s so easy to label and limit yourself as “quiet.”
Your courage is the reason this book exists.
