New guidance on the safe use of mental health apps has been published, a welcome and timely step as more people turn to digital tools for support.

We welcome clear standards that will help protect users, strengthen data security and promote evidence-based care in a fast-growing market. However, safeguards must keep pace with innovation so people can trust the support they’re accessing.

May is Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) Awareness Month

At Calm Waters, I believe in fostering understanding, compassion, and support for everyone navigating their mental health journey. This month, we’re shining a light on Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) and the individuals who live with it every day.

BPD is often misunderstood, but it’s important to know that with the right support and treatment, people with BPD can lead fulfilling, balanced lives.

At Calm Waters, I provide a safe, non-judgmental space where individuals with BPD can explore their emotions, build coping skills, and work towards healing.

💚 Did you know?

•BPD is characterized by intense emotions, impulsivity, and difficulties in relationships, but it is treatable.

•BPD affects approximately 1.4% of adults.

•You are not alone. Help and support are always available.

During this awareness month, we encourage open conversations, breaking the stigma, and offering support to those who may be struggling.

I don’t very often take to social media but felt compelled to share this post from the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy of which I am a registered member.
I, and many other therapists in private practice feel deeply concerned that we have been targeted as somehow contributing to the mental health crisis in this country by diagnosing mental health conditions. This is not the case. The role of a counsellor is to sit with clients in their pain and be with them through difficult times and not to diagnose them.
I feel the government are scapegoating us to cover shortcomings in the mental health system. Looming cuts within the benefit system on top of a struggling NHS will surely create a rise in mental health issues and this is not something to project onto the counselling profession.
If anything, the government should be asking why the profession is still unregulated and do something about it to protect us and those in need of counselling.
To become a registered therapist working within a regulated professional body, requires years of training and dedication, not just on an academic and professional level but also on a personal and emotional level too.
The rigours of this should be acknowledged, not downplayed and disrespected by some misplaced and damaging comment by Stephen Kinnock.

We’re deeply disappointed by the unfounded and harmful comments made by MP Stephen Kinnock.

Mr Kinnock's sweeping statements about private therapy don’t accurately address the challenges or reflect the skills, ethics, and good practice of our members working in private practice. These remarks show a lack of understanding of the sector and the training and expertise of our members, as well as the public protection safeguards in place.

It’s Mental Health Awareness Week and this year’s theme is movement. With the warmer weather upon us it is easier to get out and enjoy outdoor pursuits but movement doesn’t have to involve strenuous activity. Small steps at home or in the garden can all help towards the mind body connection, increasing endorphins and helping to reduce anxiety and depression.
