Good Company – The Study Society, Monday evenings at Colet House and on Zoom
Kirtan and Vedic Chanting - Silent Meditation - Discussion Group - Movements to Music We are fortunate to be able to offer Kirtan led by Margaret O'Keeffe. A small group has been practicing the age-old tradition of reciting the Vedas for some time. We find chanting together contributes towards a sense of well-being and h
armony. These invocations express eternal laws of creation and are also songs of praise. Valued for their meaning, their form of sound is said to bring blessings to the world even when the meaning is not understood. Those who find themselves unprepared to chant are invited to hum. We find chanting in such a very simple way can bring you to a place of silence, deep peace and ultimately, happiness. Whilst there is no charge made, all donations are welcome, say £5, towards the upkeep of Colet House, our centre for rest and refreshment in this increasingly busy city. Silent Meditation
18:30 - 19:00
Silent Meditation connects us with our inner self – that space of complete stillness which is present in everything in the universe and is the essence of every being. Anyone interested in the mantra meditation we give here at the Study Society is welcome to ask after the session or contact the office (see below). From the Advaita tradition it is open to all, for anyone living and working in ordinary life. There are many neurological studies on the effects of meditation. It has been shown to reduce stress and anxiety. Meetings
19:00 - 19:50
Over more than 70 years the Study Society has built up a remarkable library and archive of knowledge and material from traditions and science. Our Monday evening meetings are based on the framework of the non-dual Advaita tradition. Each term our discussion group chooses a theme to explore and discuss in a friendly and informal way, and visitors are always welcome. Again, there is no charge, but visitors are asked to make a donation, however small, towards the upkeep of Colet House. Movements to Music
20:15 - 21:30
“The Movements” are a series of sacred dances, exercises and prayers all set to music giving a gentle and profound way to access that great stillness lying behind our thoughts and desires. Collected in the late 19thC and early 20thC. Ouspensky’s teacher from schools, dervish orders and monasteries across the Middle East, Caucasus, Russia and Tibet the Movements have been taught and practiced here at Colet House since the 1930s. The first of the movements such as ‘clapping’ and ‘tapping’ are as simple warming up exercises: then others which bring you to a centred, quiet place. There are exercises where the class works together as in an occupation. And there are movements for men, and others for women; then those to represent cosmic laws. They all demand your concentration and result in a form of physical meditation. To watch the Movements (by appointment only) or to join the Class Please contact the office. No charge is made for the class as such, but donations towards the upkeep of the house are requested.
