I thought becoming a Bowen teacher would be about teaching other people.

What I hadn't expected was how much it would teach me.

When you've practised something for years, certain things become instinctive.

Your hands know where to go.

You notice things without consciously thinking about why you've noticed them.

Then you stand in front of a group of students.

Suddenly, someone asks: “Why?” And you have to stop. Think. Explain.

Sometimes demonstrate it three different ways because three different people understand it differently.

Teaching has made me look again at things I thought I already knew. It's made me more observant. More questioning. And probably more comfortable saying: “Let's explore that.”

I've been working therapeutically for more than 30 years, practising Bowen since 2012 and teaching it since 2019.

And I'm still learning.

I hope I always will be. Because I don't think experience should make us less curious.

I think it should make us more curious.

Has teaching something you love ever changed the way you understand it?

You don’t have to want to become a therapist to learn something therapeutic.

I think we sometimes assume that learning a hands-on therapy must begin with a career plan.

It doesn’t.

Sometimes it begins with curiosity.

Perhaps you’ve experienced bodywork yourself and wondered what the practitioner can feel beneath their hands.

Perhaps you’re the person in your family who naturally wants to help when someone is uncomfortable.

Or perhaps you simply want to learn something completely different, something practical, human and hands-on.

Not everything we learn has to become a qualification, a business or a new career.

Sometimes we can simply ask:

“I wonder if I’d enjoy learning this?”

And see where that curiosity takes us.

Some people who discover Bowen do eventually decide to train professionally.

Others simply enjoy their first experience of learning to work with their hands.

Both are perfectly good reasons to begin.

When was the last time you learned something simply because you were curious about it?

Curious? My next Introduction to Bowen Therapy is 7–8 November at Violet Hill Studios, St John's Wood. Details in bio (instagram) or first comment (facebook)

What if the most important part of a treatment happens when the practitioner does nothing?

It's one of the things that first makes Bowen Therapy seem rather unusual.
A Bowen practitioner makes a small number of precise movements...and then waits.

No continuous massage.
No filling the silence with more techniques.
No assumption that more input must be better.

Those pauses are an integral part of the Bowen approach; an opportunity to observe rather than immediately intervene again.

And that can be surprisingly difficult to learn because we're so accustomed to thinking that doing more means helping more.

Learning Bowen asks a different question: What happens when we give the body an input, and then give it time?

It's one of the things I love exploring with new students. So, if that idea makes you curious, I'm teaching my next Introduction to Bowen Therapy at Violet Hill Studios, St John's Wood, on 7–8 November.

But I'd love to know first: Would you find it difficult, as a practitioner, to simply wait?

What if one weekend opened the door to something completely new?

You don't need to be a therapist to learn Bowen. You don't need previous experience. You just need curiosity and a willingness to learn. 🤲

This November, I'm bringing my 2-Day Introduction to Bowen Therapy to the beautiful Violet Hill Studios in St John's Wood, London.

Over two practical, hands-on days you'll:
✨ Learn the principles behind Bowen Therapy
✨ Learn and practise core Bowen moves
✨ Give and receive Bowen
✨ Begin developing confidence in your hands
✨ Learn in a small, supportive group with individual guidance

Perhaps you're already a therapist and looking for a gentle new approach to add to your work.

Maybe you've been wondering about a career that feels more meaningful.

Or do you simply love health and wellbeing and would like to learn something that could help the people around you.

You don't have to know where it will lead before you begin.

I've worked therapeutically for over 30 years and have been teaching for Bowen College UK since 2019. One of my favourite things about teaching is watching someone arrive unsure whether they'll be able to do it, and seeing their confidence grow over the weekend.

And if you discover that Bowen really is for you, this course can become the first step towards professional Bowen practitioner training, with your introductory course fee credited towards the professional programme.

Symptoms often serve a purpose.

* Pain can encourage rest.
* Fatigue can slow us down.
* Tension can provide protection.
* Anxiety can increase vigilance.

This doesn't mean symptoms should simply be accepted.

But before asking, "How do I get rid of this?" it can sometimes be helpful to ask, "What is the message behind my symptoms?"

Understanding the role a symptom may be playing can reveal a very different perspective on recovery and wellbeing.

Supporting the body often means looking beyond the immediate symptom alone.

Through Bowen Therapy, emotional wellbeing support and integrative health approaches, the focus is on understanding the wider picture rather than simply chasing symptoms.

Not all healing approaches need to be intense to be effective.

Sometimes quieter approaches allow the body to respond more fully.

Less overwhelm.
Less force.
Less continual stimulation.

More space.
More awareness.
More regulation.
More opportunity for the nervous system to settle.

I deeply value gentle integrative approaches within my work.

Emotional wellbeing influences far more than mood.

It can affect sleep, muscle tension, breathing patterns, energy levels, pain perception, digestive function, focus, fatigue, and overall nervous system regulation. Do any of those resonate with you?

Of course, this doesn’t mean symptoms are all emotional.

It means the body and nervous system respond to lived experience constantly, and the reason why Bowen Therapy, emotional wellbeing support and integrative healthcare approaches sit at the heart of my practice.

A body that feels under pressure will often protect itself further.

So, the lightest touch of more subtle approaches can create surprisingly significant changes.

When the nervous system feels safer, the rate of breathing slows down, muscle guarding can reduce, the range of movement often improves, and the body begins responding differently.

Bowen Therapy works through small, precise inputs with pauses that allow the system time to process and integrate.

For many clients, that difference matters enormously.

The body adapts constantly to stress, pressure, injury, overload, emotional strain, and environments where it hasn’t felt fully safe to soften.

Over time, those adaptations can become patterns, such as holding up your shoulder, jaw tension, shallow breathing, fatigue, protective guarding, persistent tightness, and difficulty fully relaxing.

Supporting the body often means looking beyond the immediate symptom alone.

Through Bowen Therapy, emotional wellbeing, and integrative approaches, the focus is always on supporting the nervous system regulation gently and respectfully rather than forcing change.

Sometimes the body simply needs the opportunity to stop bracing.
