A Drop More just updated to include a short piece comparing the merits of expending energy trying to control uncertainty versus expending energy on direction and trusting the process.

A Drop More is the free to access blog section of the Millpond website.

Uncertainty (and opportunity’s place in that uncertainty) is explored in Millpond’s May issue, available now to order singly or as part of a subscription.

Our May ‘Uncertainty’ issue mails this week, with plenty of positives to consider around uncertainty, not least the opportunity it represents to creatively explore - in this case, being uncertain whether you can lino cut and print a QR code that both functions and (hopefully) has a nice Prussian Blue chic about it too.

“Whether you are in paid work or not, whether you love or hate what you do, it is worth reflecting on your relationship with productivity. In modern culture productivity is treated as a moral virtue, reinforced by language that praises “hardworking” and frowns on “wasting time”. To question this culture isn’t rejecting meaning or ambition; it’s challenging the idea that value comes from constant doing.”

What a lovely, stimulating day we’ve had. Several new Millponds orders to fulfil (thank you very much), followed by a trip to the Odyssey show at .contemporary Absolutely fantastic, thought provoking and inspirational art on show.

We went thinking the standard would be very high, and it was, but we didn’t expect to laugh out loud at some of the wit and that came with the amazing creativity on show. A delight.

Hats off to .soriano and her team. We’ll be going again.

The Gleaners 1857
Jean-François Millet

Being the son of farmers delayed Millet’s start in the art world as well as supplying him with an encyclopaedic knowledge of farming activities of the time.

Gleaning was the backbreaking work of collecting up individual grains of corn left behind after the harvest. Work exclusively undertaken by women and children, it was a subject that Millet came back to repeatedly.

When he first presented The Gleaners at a Salon show it was met with hostility, presumably because it was neither whimsical nor rustic, instead portraying the brutal reality of the lives of the French rural poor.
