Hair loss isn’t vanity. It’s identity, femininity, confidence and sometimes a profound sense of loss. ❤️

It’s looking in the mirror and not recognising the person looking back at you. It’s watching your hair fall out, feeling your confidence disappear and wondering whether you’ll ever feel like yourself again.

And sometimes, the hardest part is feeling that nobody really understands just how much it’s affecting you.

I understand. More than you might realise.

Years before becoming a Consultant Trichologist, I experienced chronic telogen effluvium and long-standing hair loss. I know the frustration of searching for answers, trying to understand why it’s happening and not knowing what to do next.

That experience was one of the reasons I chose to study trichology.

And more recently, following breast cancer treatment, I’ve experienced hair loss on an entirely different scale, losing up to 90% of my hair.

Despite my professional knowledge and everything I’ve learnt over the years, that experience was still incredibly difficult.

Because understanding the science doesn’t take away the emotional impact.

I’m Ruth Collis, a Consultant Trichologist and PRP Hair Restoration Specialist based in Haywards Heath, West Sussex. I help women and men experiencing hair loss, thinning hair and scalp concerns understand what may be contributing to their symptoms and what they can do about it.

My approach has always been about understanding the person behind the hair loss, looking beyond what we can see and considering the biological, medical and environmental factors that may be contributing.

Because hair loss is a symptom. Understanding what’s driving it is where we begin.

I understand what losing your hair can do to your confidence, and I’m here to help you understand what’s happening and what you can do about it.

You deserve to feel heard, understood and supported. ❤️

And if you know someone experiencing hair loss, please share this with them. Sometimes simply knowing that someone understands can make all the difference.

Have you noticed your hair becoming thinner since perimenopause started?

Is your ponytail smaller than it used to be? Is your parting getting wider? Are you shedding more hair, even though you’ve never had a problem with your hair before?

Maybe your blood tests have come back “normal”, but your hair still doesn’t feel normal to you.

Could changing periods be part of the picture? What about declining oestrogen or progesterone? Could poor sleep, night sweats, stress or changes in your gut health be contributing too?

And what if you’ve started HRT but your hair is still shedding, or perhaps it seems to be shedding even more?

Perimenopause hair loss and thinning hair can be confusing because there isn’t always one simple explanation.

And no, noticing a change in your hair during perimenopause doesn’t mean you just have to accept it as another inevitable part of getting older.

I’m Ruth Collis, Consultant Trichologist and PRP Hair Loss Expert in Haywards Heath, West Sussex. I help women and men understand what may be contributing to their hair loss, thinning and excessive shedding by looking at the whole biological picture, not just the hair we can see.

I’ve written a full guide answering some of the questions I hear most often about perimenopause hair loss, including what could be happening, what may be worth investigating and when it might be time to see a trichologist.

You’ve tried adding everything to help your hair. But what have you tried taking away? 👀

Welcome to Week 4 of The HRV + Hair Challenge!

This week, we’re doing something different. We’re taking something AWAY.

And I have a feeling this could be our hardest challenge yet, but what if it’s also the one that moves the needle the most?

Maybe your hair is shedding more than usual, your ponytail feels thinner, your sleep is disrupted, or you’re constantly stressed, exhausted and running on empty.

You’ve tried the supplements, shampoos, serums and hair growth treatments, but you’re still searching for answers.

What if improving your hair health isn’t always about adding MORE?

That’s exactly what we’re exploring in this 12-week challenge.

Each week, we’re making one small, evidence-informed change to our everyday habits and exploring how it might influence our HRV (heart rate variability), sleep, stress, recovery and potentially our hair health.

Because hair can be a biomarker of health, and sometimes we need to look beyond the scalp.

I’m Ruth, a Consultant Trichologist and PRP Hair Loss Expert in Haywards Heath, West Sussex. I help men and women experiencing hair loss, thinning hair and excessive shedding understand what may be contributing to their hair changes.

And I’m doing this challenge alongside you, tracking my HRV, sleep and how I feel.

🤍 Haven’t started yet? It’s NEVER too late!

Go back and watch the previous three Reels. All the FREE guides are still available.

After this week, we’re taking a short break from introducing new challenges so everyone can catch up and bring everything we’ve learnt together.

No expensive gadgets, supplements or complicated routines. Just small changes that could make a meaningful difference.

Could you give something up for seven days? 👀

Comment WEEK4 and I’ll send you this week’s FREE guide!

Your hair is falling out. You don’t know why. And you’re not even sure who you’re supposed to see.

Or maybe that’s not you, but you immediately thought of someone who’s going through exactly this.

Maybe the blood tests came back “normal”, but the hair is still shedding.

Maybe the parting is getting wider or the ponytail feels noticeably thinner.

Maybe they’ve tried shampoos, supplements, serums and changing their diet, but still don’t understand what’s happening.

And the questions keep coming:

Who should I see about hair loss?

What does a trichologist actually do?

Should I see a trichologist or dermatologist for hair loss?

Can you see a trichologist if your blood tests are normal?

What happens at a trichology consultation?

How do I find a properly qualified trichologist?

These are exactly the questions I wanted to answer with this blog.

Because despite how common hair loss is, many people still don’t know that there is a specialist whose clinical focus is hair and scalp conditions.

I’m Ruth Collis, a Consultant Trichologist and PRP Hair Loss Expert based in Haywards Heath, West Sussex. I help women and men experiencing hair loss, excessive hair shedding and thinning hair understand what may be contributing to their hair changes, using an evidence-informed, whole-person approach.

My latest blog explains what a trichologist is, when to see one, what happens during a trichology consultation and what to look for when choosing a qualified trichologist.

If you’re experiencing hair loss yourself, this is for you. If someone came to mind while you were reading this, send it to them. 🤍

Comment BLOG 👇 below and I’ll send you my full guide to female hair loss.

Why is my hair getting thinner? Why is my parting getting wider? Why am I suddenly shedding so much hair? And why does everyone keep telling me my hair looks fine?

If you’re a woman experiencing hair loss, you’ve probably asked yourself at least one of these questions.

Maybe you’re wondering:

Why is my hair thinning even though my blood tests are normal?

Can stress really cause this much hair loss?

Is my hair thinning because of perimenopause or menopause?

Why has my ponytail become so much smaller?

Is this female pattern hair loss or excessive hair shedding?

Can hormonal changes cause hair loss?

Why am I losing hair when I feel otherwise healthy?

And perhaps the biggest one…

Will my hair ever get thicker again?

Female hair loss can feel incredibly confusing, particularly when you know your hair has changed but nobody else seems to see it yet.

And often, there isn’t one simple answer.

I’m Ruth, a Consultant Trichologist and PRP Hair Loss Expert in Haywards Heath, West Sussex. I help women experiencing hair thinning, excessive hair shedding and female hair loss understand what may be happening beneath the surface, using an evidence-informed, whole-person approach.

I answer these questions and more in my latest blog, Hair loss in women, what nobody tells you.

If you’ve been searching for answers about your hair, this is a good place to start.

If you’ve found yourself Googling “why is my hair falling out?”, “why am I suddenly shedding so much hair?” or “how do I stop my hair from falling out?”, this is for you.

Because one of the hardest things about hair loss is that the answer isn’t always obvious.

The hair shedding you’re seeing today may relate to something that happened weeks or even months ago. And sometimes there isn’t just one cause. Different types of hair loss and different contributing factors can overlap.

That’s why simply buying another hair growth supplement, shampoo or treatment without understanding what is causing your hair loss can leave you going round in circles.

I’m Ruth, a Consultant Trichologist and PRP Hair Loss Expert in Haywards Heath, West Sussex. I help men and women experiencing hair loss, excessive hair shedding and thinning hair understand what may actually be driving it, so they can make informed decisions about what to do next.

I’ve written a full guide explaining what’s normal, signs your hair shedding has changed, why hair can suddenly start falling out, hormonal and female hair loss, and when it’s worth getting professional help.

COMMENT IN 👇 if you want to see what happens when we tackle hair loss from the inside out, without spending a fortune doing it.

What if improving our hair health, HRV, sleep and overall health starts with things that cost next to nothing?

That’s what I’m going to explore.

Every week I’ll introduce ONE simple, low-cost change and track my HRV, sleep, how I feel and, ultimately, my hair.

Because I believe hair can be a biomarker of health.

When we’re trying to understand what causes hair thinning, excessive hair shedding or changes in hair quality, we need to look beyond the scalp.

Stress and hair loss, poor sleep, nutritional deficiencies, menopause hair loss and hormonal hair loss can all overlap.

And there’s another group I’m particularly interested in, and gets forgotten about in a pro HRT world (which I’m pro) women like me taking anti-oestrogen medication after breast cancer treatment. What can we do to support our health, hair and healthspan when our hormonal landscape has been deliberately changed?

I’m Ruth, a Consultant Trichologist and PRP Hair Loss Expert. I help people understand what may be contributing to their hair loss, looking beyond the hair itself to build a more complete picture of their hair and health.

After chemotherapy, losing most of my hair, radiotherapy and now anti-oestrogen treatment, I’m also rebuilding.

So I’m making myself an N of one.

No expensive gadgets, supplements or scalp treatments. Just accessible, evidence-informed changes that most of us can try.

This isn’t about proving that improving HRV grows hair. It’s about asking a bigger question.

If we improve the foundations of our health, what else might change?

HRV. Sleep. Energy. How we feel. And ultimately, our hair.

Week one starts Monday.

👇 Comment CANDIDATE and I’ll send you my PRP hair loss self-check checklist to help you understand whether PRP could be right or wrong for you.

Recently, I’m seeing more patients than ever who come to me wanting PRP hair treatment, but after consultation, I advise them not to have it.

Why? Because PRP is not the right treatment for every type of hair loss.

Many people understandably self-diagnose their thinning or shedding, see PRP hair restoration online and assume it’s the solution. But androgenetic alopecia, telogen effluvium, alopecia areata, nutritional hair loss and other hair and scalp conditions have different underlying mechanisms, and more than one condition can coexist.

This is where seeing a qualified trichologist who also provides PRP makes a difference. We can investigate and diagnose your hair loss first, then determine whether PRP is appropriate, rather than treating based on an assumption.

I’m Ruth Collis, Consultant Trichologist and PRP Hair Loss Expert. I help men and women understand why they’re losing their hair and find the right evidence-informed treatment approach for them.

And I understand the impact personally. I’ve experienced two very different types of significant hair loss myself, including losing up to 90% of my hair during chemotherapy. I know how frightening it can be to see your hair disappearing, how vulnerable it can make you feel, and how desperately you can want something, anything, to make it stop.

But desperation shouldn’t lead to the wrong treatment.

Diagnosis first. Treatment second.

COMMENT 👇 How long have you been searching for answers about your hair loss, less than 6 months, 6 to 12 months, 1 to 3 years, or have you lost count?

Hair loss is rarely as simple as “my hair is falling out, what should I take?”

Hair growth is energetically demanding, and when the body is under physiological stress, it prioritises essential functions. The effect on your hair may not become visible until months later.

But not all shedding is temporary, and hair loss conditions can coexist. In clinic, I regularly see patients with two conditions occurring at the same time, sometimes three or more. Each can have a different mechanism and require a different treatment approach.

Even “normal” blood tests don’t always tell the whole story. Laboratory reference ranges are broad and designed primarily to identify disease, whereas healthy hair growth can require much narrower parameters.

I’m Ruth Collis, Consultant Trichologist and PRP Hair Loss Expert in West Sussex. I help men and women with hair loss and thinning understand what’s driving it, get the right diagnosis and find an evidence-informed, personalised approach to treatment. I also understand hair loss personally, having experienced significant hair loss twice myself.

Hair loss can be a condition in its own right, but it can also be a symptom. Getting the diagnosis right comes first.
