🐾 “But they WANT to go for a walk!” 😂

Yes… we know. And they also want to eat things they shouldn’t, chase squirrels into oblivion and roll in things that definitely shouldn’t be rolled in. 🤦‍♀️😂

As dog walkers, sometimes our job is to say “nope, not today!”

When temperatures rise, we have to think about things our dogs can’t — hot pavements, rising temperatures in vehicles, humidity, the individual dog’s age, breed, coat and health, and how quickly they can overheat.

So on hotter days, a walk might become:

🌿 A short garden visit
👃 Sniffing and enrichment games
🧠 A little training session
💦 Plenty of water and rest
🐾 Or simply postponing the walk until it’s safe

And yes… your dog may look at us like we've personally ruined their entire life. (Ahem Afra, Ted, Saffy and Fred)😂

Their disappointment lasts a few hours. Heatstroke can be life-threatening.

☀️ A few simple ways to help keep your dog cool:

💧 Make sure they always have access to fresh, cool water.

🏠 Keep them indoors or in a cool, shaded area during the hottest part of the day.

🌳 If they do need to go outside, choose cooler times and stick to shaded areas.

🐾 Check the pavement with the back of your hand. If it’s too hot for you, it’s too hot for their paws.

🚗 Never leave your dog in a parked car, even for a short time. Temperatures can rise incredibly quickly.

🧊 Frozen enrichment can be a great way to keep them occupied — stuffed Kongs, lick mats or suitable frozen treats can provide entertainment without the exertion.

🐶 Remember that some dogs are more vulnerable to heat than others, particularly flat-faced breeds, older dogs, puppies, overweight dogs and those with underlying health problems.

And perhaps most importantly…

Don’t rely on your dog to tell you when they’ve had enough. Dogs can be determined little so and so's when there's something exciting happening. 😂

We’ll always choose a slightly grumpy dog over an overheated one. ❤️🐶

🌡️ Another hot weather heads-up! 🌡️

*Edit: field trip is cancelled today and likely the rest of the week.*

It looks like we’re in for another warm one tomorrow, (and the coming days) with temperatures expected to reach around 27–28°C. We do currently have a Five Acres field trip booked for 12pm, when it’s forecast to be around 22°C, so we are keeping a close eye on things and will make a decision based on the actual conditions tomorrow.

As always, once temperatures reach 24°C+, walks may be changed to garden/home visits where appropriate. We’ll also be testing the temperature of the pavements before any walks, as the air temperature doesn’t necessarily reflect how hot the ground is for little paws. 🐾

For dogs travelling in the van, we’ll also be closely monitoring the temperature inside the vehicle throughout the day. We have two thermometers in the van so we can keep an eye on the temperature in different areas and make sure it remains comfortable and safe for everyone travelling with us. ❤️

If you’d rather cancel your dog’s session tomorrow, please just let me know. Absolutely no problem at all — we completely understand that some dogs (and owners!) would rather give the heat a miss.

We will always prioritise the dogs’ welfare and won’t put anyone in a situation that we feel is unsafe.

To be honest, though — the constant hot weather cancellations and changes this summer are having a pretty significant financial impact on the business, so where sessions can *safely* go ahead, we are really keen to keep them running.

If you’re happy for your dog to attend, you don’t need to do anything — we will keep your booking as planned.

Thanks as always for your understanding! 🐾💗
