What you focus your attention on can completely change your outlook.

This morning I could have focused on:
😩 how difficult and unpleasant it was trudging through several inches on mud
😩 how cold it was, making my ears hurt and my nose run
😩 how I didn't really want to get up to walk the dog this morning but I do it out of duty

Instead I focused on:
☺️ noticing the wildlife around me - the birds singing in the trees, and the deer creeping across the fields
☺️ how much enjoyment my dog was getting from the walk
☺️ the feel of the cool, fresh, misty air filling my lungs, and the earthy smell of the ground

With practice our brains can be rewired to notice the positive, improving our mental wellbeing - that's the power of neuroplasticity.

At the centre of my approach to therapy is nature connection, and I don't only mean the natural world around us - we're a part of nature too.

I'm talking about connection with our bodies, senses, emotions, physiology, natural rhythms including circadian rhythm and menstrual cycle.

It's about social and human connection: being part of something bigger, belonging, feeling listened to and supported, feeling valued and purposeful.

It's also connection with: values, identity, the present moment, what makes life worth living.

Ignoring our nature can leave us feeling disconnected, burned out, stressed, and struggling to cope with the demands of daily life.

If you’re looking for supportive, holistic, non-judgmental help with your health and wellbeing, I offer online Occupational Therapy and coaching to help you connect with what’s important to you, feel free to get in touch.

There’s a lot of New Year health and weight-loss messaging right now and much of it is driven by guilt, shame and blame. You’re not disciplined enough. You’re making excuses.

No wonder it can feel like you’ve failed before you’ve even started, especially if you’re living with long-term conditions or other barriers.

A few things I want you to know 👇
✨ You don’t have to set resolutions or copy anyone else’s goals. If you do, they should be flexible, doable and aligned with your values. It’s also okay to slow down in the darker, colder months.
✨ Small habits matter. Change takes time. Progress isn’t linear, and rest is part of the process. Missing days isn’t failure, the long-term picture matters.
✨ Movement isn’t just exercise classes and workouts at the gym. Find ways to move that you enjoy and can sustain.
✨ Weight management is complex. Just take a look at the Foresight obesity maps. Those so-called “excuses” are real factors, not moral failings, and deserve compassion, not shame.

If you’re looking for supportive, holistic, non-judgmental help with your health and wellbeing goals, I offer online Occupational Therapy coaching focused on sustainable behaviour change. Feel free to get in touch 💗
