Carers Week is an annual campaign to raise awareness of caring, highlight the challenges unpaid carers face and recognise the contribution they make to families and communities throughout the UK. It also helps people who don't think of themselves as having caring responsibilities to identify as carers and access much-needed support.

A carer is someone who provides unpaid care and support to a family member or friend who has a disability, illness, mental health condition, addiction, or who needs extra help as they grow older. It isn’t someone who volunteers or is employed to provide support.

You’re amazing. Through us all coming together and sharing our support, we can help ensure our communities recognise, understand and value unpaid carers. Your name will soon appear on the Building Carer Friendly Communities wall, once our team has approved your entry.

How to take care of your baby's teeth

Good oral health is very important for a child's growth and can affect their health. Starting good tooth brushing habits early can help prevent tooth decay and other problems later on.
For babies and toddlers up to 3, brush last thing at night and on 1 other occasion.

Use a smear of toothpaste that contains at least 1,000 ppm (parts per million) fluoride. You can find this information on the back of the toothpaste packaging.

At first you might not be able to brush much, and this is okay. The most important thing is to get your baby used to brushing their teeth as part of a daily routine.

Do
use a smear (the size of a grain of rice) of toothpaste for babies and toddlers up to 3 years

use a pea sized amount of toothpaste for children aged 3 to 6

brush your child’s teeth last thing at night and on 1 other occasion

use a toothpaste with at least 1,000 ppm (parts per million) fluoride

replace your child's toothbrush every 3 months or sooner if the bristles get damaged

encourage your child to spit out toothpaste and not swallow it

store toothpaste somewhere your child can't reach, or in a locked cupboard

Don’t
do not rinse with water after brushing as it washes away fluoride

do not let your child eat or lick toothpaste from the tube

Help your little one maintain a lifetime of healthy smiles by teaching them good dental habits, such as regular brushing and not eating or drinking too much sugar.

Every child’s journey is shaped by the moments that matter, from first steps and first words to the first day at school. The government’s Best Start in Life campaign, delivered by the Department for Education and the Department for Health and Social Care, aims to help break down barriers to opportunity for every family, supporting parents and children from pregnancy through to age five and beyond.

We know that being a parent is filled with joyful firsts, but it can also bring natural worries and questions. That’s why Best Start in Life brings together trusted information, advice, and support - making it easier and more affordable for families to access early education and childcare, health guidance, and practical help at every stage.

Best Start in Life is here to help parents and carers whether they are expecting, navigating their child’s early health, exploring childcare options, or preparing for school. The new website offers practical tools like a childcare checker, a breakfast clubs map, and links to local support, all designed to make the journey as a parent easier.

From pregnancy to childcare, get advice and support for your child’s development at BestStartinLife.gov.uk.

Digital screens are now a normal part of family life. The early years are however critical for development - 90% of a child’s brain development occurs by age 5, making it a critical period for the development of social, emotional and cognitive skills. Consequently, on Friday 27 March, the government published new, evidence-informed guidance to help parents and carers of children under 5 navigate screen time.
