Well, thats a wrap, Primary school days are done and a new chapter has begun.
Rubi started Secondary School!
When diagnosied in 2017, and given her prognosis, we couldn't see this day, it was a blank page. Thinking her Primary School Years would be a routine of illness, hospital admissions, home days and part time education. Coming of immuno-suppressants in 2020, a wee blip meant Dad and I had bloods done for kidney transplant matching.
However, as per her own protocol, Rubi stabilised and has remained in remission since, allowing her to go through Primary school without long hospital stays or periods of illness.
We are incredibly grateful of this, as being in school has meant Rubi has thrived. She loved her teachers, who've been instrumental in making sure she was safe, encouraging her to drink water, ensuring school meals suited, and helping to keep her well. Importantly, several staff trained to administer her feeds at school, meaning she could stay there and I could continue to work.
We know the support at secondary is different, so this last year, we have been encouraging Rubi to become more independent. Her feeds tweaked, means these are no longer needed at school, allowing her to socialise with her peers, which is incredibly important.
Rubi is more aware of how diet affects kidneys. She is learning what foods are good and no so good for renal function and the impact of potassium, phosphate, salt or not drinking enough. All preparation for choosing her own meals whether in school canteen or out down the town.
We talk openly about kidneys, dialysis and transplant, making her aware of her future.
We are so proud of Rubi, our warrior, our funny and full of sass quine. Although her mouth does get her in trouble sometimes.
Life with chronic illness is unknown.
Living with the unknown is scary.
Dealing with the treatments and interventions is difficult.
But, with all the right tools in place, Rubi has skills to cope with and manage her health, kidney condition and all that comes her way.
As always, our Rubi will write the next chapter in her book, in her way.
