Not every young person feels comfortable in a therapy room and that's okay.
Creative Trails offers a softer approach. A chance to talk, move and simply be in nature.

This week I’m chatting with Yasmin Shaheen-Zaffar about Building Better Bonds with Emotional Regulation 🤍

Yasmin is a BACP-accredited trauma and relational therapist and counsellor, and the creator of Polyvagal Teen®, Scribbledeedo®, Neurosloth® and The Hearts Whisper®.

We chat about emotional regulation, relationships and how we can build stronger connections with ourselves and others. 🫶

I loved this conversation and I hope you do too!

I’ve been keeping a little something under my hat…

And today, I can finally share it. 💛

From today, I’m officially opening a limited number of Creative Counselling spaces for adults.

Yep. The grown-ups are getting a turn too. 😂

Lots of you know me for my work with children and young people, but what you might not know is that my original counselling training focused mainly on working with adults.

And recently, I’ve found myself coming back to it.

Because the things I love about creative counselling don’t suddenly stop being helpful when we turn 18.

Adults struggle to find the words too.

Sometimes you know something isn’t quite right, but couldn’t tell someone exactly what.

Sometimes you’ve spent so long looking after everyone else that you’ve lost track of what you need.

And sometimes someone asks “So… how are you feeling?” and despite having approximately 4,000 thoughts in your head, your mind suddenly goes completely blank. 😅

That’s where creative counselling can help.

We can talk. We can create. We can use colour, imagery, objects, writing or whatever feels useful to you.

We can even take our sessions outside and use natural spaces, because sometimes getting out of four walls, walking, noticing what’s around us and simply being in nature can make it easier to talk and explore how you’re feeling.

And no, you absolutely do NOT have to be good at art.

Stick people are very welcome here. 😂

Launching this today, on my birthday, feels even more special.

A new year for me and a lovely new chapter for SJR Counselling.

I’m really excited (and maybe a tiny bit nervous!) to finally put this out into the world.

Creative Counselling for Adults is officially OPEN. 💛

If you’d like to know more about how it works, what I can support you with and what to expect from your first session, head to:

August has given us a lot to think about when it comes to our children.

From the endless “I’m bored!” and sibling arguments, to changes in routine, bigger emotions and the pressure of September getting closer.

But there’s been one question running through everything I’ve shared this month:

What are our children really trying to tell us?

Because they don’t always tell us with words.

Sometimes it’s a change in behaviour.

More meltdowns. More anxiety. Difficulty sleeping. Withdrawing.

Or perhaps you’ve noticed the complete opposite over the summer.

They’re calmer. Happier. Sleeping better. More like themselves.

That can tell us something too.

And now, as September approaches, not every child is excited about going back to school. For some children, simply thinking about returning can feel completely overwhelming.

Instead of only asking:

“How do we get them through the school gates?”

Perhaps we need to start with:

“What is making going back feel so difficult?”

I’ve brought together everything I’ve been talking about throughout August into my latest blog — from listening to young people and navigating summer boredom to understanding changes in behaviour and supporting children as September approaches.

Not every family is counting down to the first day back at school.

For some children, September brings excitement.

For others, just thinking about going back can bring anxiety, sleepless nights, bigger emotions, withdrawal or conversations about not wanting to go.

And for some families, September won't mean going back to school at all.

They may be home educating, waiting for alternative provision or still trying to work out what happens next.

When a child is struggling with school, it's easy for the focus to become:

“How do we get them through the school gates?”

But perhaps the first question needs to be:

“What is making going back feel so difficult?”

What looks like refusal, avoidance or defiance from the outside can sometimes be a child trying to communicate something they don't yet have the words to explain.

Listen. Be curious. Give them space to talk without immediately trying to fix it.

And remember, there isn't one version of what September has to look like.

If your child is struggling with school, anxiety or the changes September brings, creative counselling can give them a safe space to explore what they're feeling in a way that works for them.

If you'd like to chat about whether I could support your child, send me a message.
