How many public saunas should you expect where you live?

That’s a question Mika started exploring last week after possibly having too much coffee ☕️ and decided to build a thing 👨‍💻

He came up with a concept for a metric – expected saunas, xS. It borrows from football analytics (expected goals, xG) and applies it to sauna geography. Thanks to the British Sauna Society Sauna Map, open data and tools like Claude Code – meaningfully exploring this question was within reach.

xS sets the expectation – how many public saunas should a given area have (or “score”) based on its data characteristics?

Go to sauna-xs.uk, pop in a UK postcode and find out. Alternatively roll the dice 🎲 and enter, what might just become the new “postcode lottery”.

There a lot more beyond the surface. Sauna xS might be becoming first geographic information system (GIS) or business intelligence (BI) suite for the new wave sauna culture.
