Great evening at for the Red Rose Dairy Discussion Group farm walk!

Started off with discussing calf management, followed by a tour around the farm and hearing all about Tom’s farming life and the way he’s diversified over the years 🚜📸🥛👏🏼

🥛 Happy World Milk Day! 🥛

Today, we celebrate one of nature’s most nutritious foods and the dedicated farmers who work tirelessly every day to produce it.

And a huge thank you had to go to our dairy farmers for creating the wonderful food source that also brings us cheese, ice cream, yoghurt and milk chocolate! Every day luxuries in my diet 😃🥛🧀🍦🍫

Behind every litre of milk is a commitment to animal welfare, nutrition, herd health, and sustainable farming practices. From the moment a calf is born, every management decision plays a role in shaping the future productivity and longevity of the dairy cow, which is vital for feeding the nation 🇬🇧

So today, let’s recognise the hard work, dedication, and expertise that goes into producing high-quality milk and support the industry in every way we can!

Here’s to the farmers, the cows, and the next generation of dairy replacements 🐄🥛

A long but very enjoyable day up in Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 🐮☀️

Started off with a visit to a dairy farm I am working with for their UK Dairy Carbon Network project.

The aim is to reduce carbon footprint through improving heifer rearing efficiencies. In the short-term through reducing morbidity on farm and improving growth rates, and long-term through reducing age at first calving and supporting heifers to reach higher yields once in lactation 🥛🚀

Then I headed off to meet to see their Calf Hub building in person! Seeing alternative calf housing ideas is so valuable, as no two farms are the same and I think we’ve yet to achieve the “perfect” calf shed… (if that’s even possible) 🤣🐮🏡

We then enjoyed a late butty and cake before my 4 hour drive home 🚗💨

These past few days have been SCORCHERS 🥵🔥☀️

Measuring THI is important when it comes to livestock, as this takes into consideration the temperature as well as the humidity. Humidity can have a huge impact on how “hot” an environment actually feels, and increases in humidity can prevent heat from being released to the same extent 🐮

Bit of a reality check today…

I’ve been doing this job since I was 20 years old. I’m now 27. 7 years of travelling the UK advising on calf nutrition, management and environment.

And I’ll be honest, there’s been times in my career where things have felt a bit “stale”. Similar problems. Similar solutions. Similar results.

BUT, sometimes, life throws a curve ball (or multiple) and you find farms to work with that are trying so hard to improve their calves, but nothing seems to be working.

And don’t get me wrong, colostrum is ABSOLUTELY VITAL. You mess up colostrum, you mess up everything else.

However, with some units, it might not be as simple as “feed more colostrum” or “feed an expensive milk replacer”. Those areas are protocoled and fed correctly, but we’re still seeing issues. Sound familiar?

This is where taking a whole-system approach is essential.

Diving into all areas of nutrition, management and environment helps to identify the potentially overlooked areas that are hindering calf performance.

And if you are feeling like you’ve tried everything and nothing’s working, you’re not alone.

Sometimes having someone external to help guide you and work alongside you is important, so that the small “wins” can be identified and action plans are put into place 🤝🏼
