🤎 What is cupping therapy?
You may have seen the circular marks left by cupping, but what exactly is it?
Cupping is a traditional Chinese medicine therapy where cups are placed on the skin and a vacuum is created using suction or heat (fire cupping). This gently lifts the skin and underlying tissues.
Think of it as the opposite of massage! Massage applies pressure down into the tissues, whereas cupping draws the tissues upwards and apart. This can help ease muscle tension, encourage local circulation and promote relaxation.
Cupping in Chinese medicine:
In Traditional Chinese Medicine, cupping is used to encourage the movement of Qi (energy) and Blood, helping to address what is described as stagnation. It has also traditionally been used for respiratory concerns.
What about the circular marks?
Marks can range from light pink to deep purple and are usually temporary. In TCM, darker marks have traditionally been associated with greater stagnation, while variation in colours can indicate the different TCM patterns that could be present.
What happens during a Tula cupping session?
My dedicated back cupping treatment lasts around 45 minutes and combines several techniques:
🤎 Relaxing massage to prepare the tissues
🤎 Gua sha
🤎 Moving cupping across the back
🤎 Stationary cups, with a TDP heat lamp to deeply warm the muscles
🤎 Finishing massage
Cupping can also be incorporated into an acupuncture appointment when appropriate, depending on your individual needs and health history.
Whether you’re carrying tension in your neck, shoulders and back or simply need time to pause and relax, cupping offers another way to support your wellbeing.
