I've just had the pleasure of spending a morning with Gillian Higgins of Horses Inside Out, helping with a tiny bit of prep work for the ever growing equine anatomy exhibition, coming up very soon in August (all details on the H.I.O website)

Its just not possible when you're a bit geeky and surrounded by a multitude of various anatomical specimens and exhibits, not to get captivated by something of interest and this time it was Lulu

Lulu was a relatively young horse who lost her life to laminitis, with perforated pedal bones on all four feet
You can meet these feet in person if you attend in August along with the rest of Lulu's skelleton and if you do come and see her, make sure you pay her pedal bones some attention too, as you will be able to see the extensive bone loss she suffered prior to euthansisa

Messing around with a core balance pad while waiting for glue to dry, the horse sinks in more medially than laterally in stance, but what to do with the information?

As I’m very much one for central support with any shoes I apply these days, there is no problem for me to enhance the packing of the medial collateral groove in addition to the general packing, I can’t say for sure but my gut says this will aid stability for the limb

So this is a genuine question! Especially in light of some saying how the HM protocol has supported their horses where a...

So this is a genuine question! Especially in light of some saying how the HM protocol has supported their horses where all else has failed

The only scenario I can both understand and acknowledge (within limits) is that of a vertical or hyper positive angled pedal bone giving rise to pain within the hoof capsule and the subsequent reduction of heel height improving comfort (this could have a book written on it and I’ve no intention or interest in doing that yet)

So the question is, where the heels have been over elevated, does anyone have any pictures of horses burying their heels into a conformable surface such as pea gravel or sand while leaving the toe parallel? I can supply pictorial evidence of horses wishing to bury their toes and elevate their heels but I have never seen the reverse, but then my philosophy has never been to sustain artificial elevation beyond what the horse needs at the time and never as a matter of course without reason

This I think is a great and very important video

First thing that stands out for me is how, especially in domestication here in the U.K. at least, many horses could do with more sole thickness, you can see very clearly on this section that there isn’t a great amount of material between the pedal bone and the outside world and if my dissection observations are anything to go by this is actually one of the better examples we might see

I think also it shows very well just how suspended that pedal bone is and when considering a shod option, whether composite or steel, getting proactive sole support in the form of pads and packing, or a generous bearing surface to the base of the shoes we may use becomes important, depending upon the environment the horse is living in of course

I’ve said it before and it will always haunt me, that looking back, I wish I had deployed pads and packing far more than I did when I was shoeing with open heel steel shoes, to the point that other than in winter when ground conditions deteriorated , I’d have applied them as a routine to all I shod

Its been a long time sat watching developments over the pond!

As soon as EasyCare Inc. Protective Hoofwear began publisising the early stages of the Tripple D's my ears pricked up and with one particular horse in mind to trial some on

Yesterday a pair went on, superglued with the mushroom cuffs - an experience for sure and one I'm hoping will prove very successful but time will tell

This horse has a high play drive and a lot of interaction so if anyone will break this setup for me, this guy will so I have everything crossed 🤞🤞🤞

Now is the moment! I have ridiculed and challenged Hoofing Marvellous and Gawesworth Track Livery at every turn, believing their methodology and doctrine to be worse than fundamentally flawed

Now, I’m prepared to unreservedly apologise and admit I’ve been wrong all along IF! They commit to the structured and peer reviewed scientific process as is now being gifted to them on a plate, assuming the conclusion finds in their favour of course

But then my opinion probably doesn’t matter anyway but nevertheless an unreserved apology is on offer if proved appropriate

I’m sure this goes on up and down the country day in day out, after all why were anti weaving bars created in the first place?

Some horses adapt to 12x12 solitary confinement but the ramifications for those who don’t can be something else

What is it like to live continuously with elevated stress? As there is both a physiological and emotional impact for the sufferer and by the time it has built into displacement behaviour it’s already an issue!

It’s such a hard call accepting and acknowledging genuine feedback from our loved animals, but everything in the video I have now removed was for human convenience and does nothing for the horses who genuinely can’t cope

This!! Give them a job and they’ll be healthier physically and mentally for it 👌

No more looking for that “tiny” rider

This is an opportunity!
