Today is International Day of Homebirth 🤍
I feel incredibly lucky to have experienced two amazing home births of my own. They were completely different from one another, yet both were empowering, positive and deeply special in their own way.
As both a mum and a birth professional, I know that home birth isn't the right choice for everyone, but I am so grateful that it was an option available to me.
We are incredibly fortunate in Leicestershire to have access to the fantastic . The dedication, kindness and expertise of these midwives help so many families feel safe, informed and supported in making the choices that are right for them.
Three facts about home birth that often surprise people:
1. For women with straightforward pregnancies, planned home birth is a safe option supported by national guidelines.
2. Research shows that first-time mums planning a home birth are less likely to have interventions such as forceps, ventouse or a caesarean birth compared to those planning a hospital birth.
3. Being in a familiar environment can help you feel more relaxed, which supports the release of oxytocin – the hormone that helps labour progress and supports bonding with your baby after birth.
Home birth isn't about being "better" than hospital birth. It's about having choices and being able to give birth in the place where you feel safest and most comfortable.
A huge thank you to the wonderful UHL Home Birth Team for everything you do for local families. You make such a difference. 🤍
