That question you nearly didn’t ask because you thought it sounded silly.

ASK IT.

Midwives would much rather answer a question that turns out to be nothing to worry about than have you sitting at home worrying alone.

There are no medals for “not wanting to bother anyone .” Bleeding, discharge, mental health worries, severe headaches. Ask.

There is so much going on in those first few days of life. Your tiny newborn is already doing some pretty amazing things.

So if your weekend involves feeding, cuddling, nappy changes and very little sleep — you’re doing just fine.

Take a breath, enjoy the cuddles and remember that you don’t have to have everything figured out.

5 FAB FACTS ABOUT BREASTFEEDING

1. Breast milk is more than just food
Breast milk contains antibodies that help protect babies from a number of common infections and illnesses.
It really is pretty clever stuff!

2. Breast milk changes as your baby grows
Your milk continues to provide important nutrition as your baby gets older. After 6 months, breast milk continues alongside complementary foods and can still provide a significant part of your baby’s nutritional needs.

3. There’s no need to give water to a breastfed baby under 6 months
Even on hot days! Breast milk contains plenty of water to keep your baby hydrated. If your baby seems thirsty, offering an extra breastfeed is recommended.

4. Breastfeeding benefits both of you
Breastfeeding is associated with health benefits for mothers too, including a lower risk of breast and ovarian cancer and some other health conditions.

5. There is no ‘perfect’ breastfeeding journey
Some babies feed frequently, some less frequently. Some parents breastfeed for days, some for months, and some for years.
Every breastfeeding journey is individual — and support matters.

Whatever feeding looks like for you and your baby, you deserve kindness, support and evidence-based information.
