A Week of Deep Learning, Practice and Transformation

Master Ding Academy recently concluded a highly successful one-week Residential Retreat, bringing together MDA Instructors and Advanced Level One members from across Europe for an intensive and rewarding period of study, training, and ongoing personal development.

Throughout the week, participants immersed themselves in the practice of the Academy's three Chi Kung sets, deepening both their understanding and ex*****on of these foundational exercises. Daily training sessions provided valuable opportunities to enhance internal awareness, cultivate energy more effectively, and strengthen the connection between mind, body, and breath.

A major focus of the retreat was detailed form correction. Under the close guidance of Master Ding, Master Alan Ding, and Senior Instructor Mahadeo, students worked diligently to refine posture, alignment, movement quality, and structural integrity within their Tai Chi practice. These corrections enabled participants to gain a clearer understanding of the principles that underpin authentic and effective Tai Chi training.

Push Hands training formed another important component of the programme – Applied Chi. Through partner exercises and practical applications, attendees explored sensitivity, balance, timing, and the dynamic expression of Tai Chi principles. These sessions encouraged greater awareness of connection, listening energy, and the ability to remain relaxed and centred under pressure.

Central to the retreat was the exploration of the Tai Chi principle of Song—the art of deep relaxation without collapse. Through lectures, demonstrations, guided practice, and individual correction, participants developed a deeper appreciation of how Song enhances stability, fluidity, sensitivity, and internal power. Many students experienced significant breakthroughs in their understanding of this essential principle and its application within both Chi Kung and Tai Chi practice.

Beyond the training hall, the retreat fostered a strong sense of community, friendship, and shared purpose. The supportive environment enabled students and instructors alike to exchange knowledge, inspire one another, and further strengthen the bonds within the Master Ding Academy family.

The retreat proved to be an enriching and rewarding experience for all involved, leaving participants with renewed motivation, deeper understanding, and practical tools to continue their personal development and training journey.

Master Ding Academy looks forward to building on the success of this event and welcoming members to future residential retreats and training programmes.

Letting Tai Chi Shape the Life Within

In life - be it at work or at home with the family and friends, one has to be true to oneself. We have only one life, and within it we continually make choices. Choices leading to consequences. Too often do we lose our way and are entangled in the here and now. But let us never forget that we have the choice - the choice to follow a happier and more enjoyable existence rather than continue along a path of discontent and misery.

It is not easy to do, but is it never impossible to change our direction, if we want to. It is about letting go. Many of our past experiences make us who we are today. Learning Traditional Tai Chi is about helping you take the initial step of change. Through Tai Chi we begin to work within ourselves – slowly discarding the ‘baggage’ we have bottled up inside us. You will slowly become more confident and bring back harmony and balance in mind, body and spirit. The journey though, is not an easy one and there are stumbling blocks that we need to work through to achieve our goals. The process is slow and requires perseverance. It takes time and lots of Tai Chi practice. It is always too easy to blame others for our own failures. Traditional Tai Chi is not just about self-defence, fitness, flexibility, relaxation and de-stressing. These are merely superficial derivatives from practising Tai Chi. The core of the practice, is to let Tai Chi grow inside you - to come from within. Only by letting go, will you be able to facilitate that change and continue to help you grow into a mature and better person.

Happy New Year to all our readers.
2026- the year of the horse.

Here is an interesting translated text from a Chinese Tai Chi master’s New Year’s reflections, we would like to share with our readers.

*********

From the moment one closes their eyes last night to the moment they open them this morning, another year has passed. Time has gone and cannot be retrieved, while what remains in the mind are the various memories of the past. This state of "what has gone and what remains" is perhaps the so-called "abbreviation" of life.

Actually, I'm long past the age of "feigning sorrow," and more often I have a resigned attitude, quietly and coldly observing the people and things outside my sight. But as long as I have breath, I will still carry a certain inexplicable "expectation" for the year that has come.

After all, time will not stop for anyone. Although the youthful passion is gone, that dreamlike ideal still leaves a lingering "stirring" in my heart. Admittedly, after a certain age, there is always more nostalgia for the past than anticipation for the future, but it cannot be denied that the pace of life only moves forward with time.

In this silent room, I first tried to think about what I hoped for in the new year. But I knew it wasn't about whether it would be good or bad, or how good I wanted it to be. Because Tai Chi had been my companion along the way, allowing me to take each step steadily and with a sense of purpose, I was already content.

This sense of groundedness allowed me to better understand that truly "living" is about deeply feeling how I got here and how I want to continue. At this moment, the word "respect" came to mind. I no longer had any desire for anything better; I simply felt a greater sense of respect for all my experiences.

Reflecting on my journey, all my feelings were the accumulation of experiences I willingly chose to have. This was simply what I had given, and what I naturally received. Therefore, with no ulterior motives and no demands, I felt an even greater sense of respect.

Because "respect" inherently reflects a genuine and serious attitude towards the interpersonal relationships and matters involved. In the rules of Tai Chi, it's a "mirror game"—what you give, Tai Chi will give you in return, a return that is equal and deserved. This is the inevitable reward for a sincere respect for interpersonal relationships and matters. This is an "expectation" for the New Year.

Master Ding Academy Annual Instructors Retreat 2025

Master Ding recently conducted the MDA Annual Instructors’ Retreat 24th -31st May 2025 assisted by Master Alan Ding and his senior student Doosyant Mahadeo, bringing together participants from across Europe. The retreat involved intensive training sessions designed to deepen understanding and enhance skills in traditional Tai Chi Chuan for both new and returning instructors.

This year’s theme focused on the Tai Chi Chuan principle of “Tun”
(團) - the mind, body and spirit united as one. Throughout the retreat, participants engaged in focused practice, learning how to embody this principle in their movements and mindset.

As always, the retreat concluded with a lively social evening, where attendees had the opportunity to showcase their own individual talents in a relaxed and joyful setting.

It was a rewarding experience for all, with great training, shared learning with lots of exchange hands (gau shou) and memorable moments with Sifu Ding.
