Is my baby getting enough breast milk? 🍼❤️
It is one of the most common questions new parents ask, and it’s completely normal to feel a bit anxious about it! Since you can't see exactly how many ounces your baby is drinking, monitoring their behavior, diapers, and growth is the best way to ensure they are getting what they need.
Swipe through our latest guide to learn the key warning signs that your baby might not be getting enough milk:
📉 Poor Weight Gain: Slow weight gain or weight loss after the initial newborn period.👶 Hunger Cues: Baby remains constantly hungry, irritable, or cries excessively even right after a long feeding.
🧷 Fewer Dirty Diapers: Fewer than 6 heavy wet diapers per day by day 4 or 5 of life.💩 Stool Pattern: Stools remain dark (meconium) past day 4, or there are too few stools.
🤱 Feeding Behavior: You don't hear audible swallowing, or your baby sucks very weakly during feeds.
💤 Physical Signs: Signs of dehydration such as a dry mouth, sunken soft spot (fontanelle), or extreme lethargy.
What should you do?
If you notice any of these signs, don't wait. We highly recommend reaching out to a pediatrician, a certified lactation consultant (IBCLC), or a local breastfeeding support group right away. They can check your baby's weight, evaluate their latch, and help you create a plan to protect your milk supply and keep your baby thriving.
Remember, reaching out for help is a sign of a wonderful, proactive parent. You’ve got this! 💪✨
