what you need to know about ferritin (your personal iron reservoir!) if you have a thyroid condition:

🩸suboptimal ferritin can produce symptoms like hair loss and fatigue that are often blamed on the thyroid
🩸GPs often ignore the importance of ferritin and rarely flag it as abnormal.. even at levels below 30 ng/ml (and we really want to be aiming for 70!)
🩸the GP prescribed and store bought iron supplements lead to a lot of digestive issues
🩸Adequate ferritin level is crucial for thyroid hormone conversion
🩸High daily iron supplementation can fuel the inflammation and still fail to raise the ferritin levels (esp when the transport is poor)
🩸Heavy periods contribute to the issue
🩸Hashimoto’s with high inflammation levels, combined with low digestion/ stomach acid production is the root cause of low ferritin for most with Hashi

you can apply the tips I shared above and you will see the numbers go up
but the long term fix lies in addressing the broader terrain and lowering the autoimmune inflammation 💡

Thyroid fatigue is a different beast. 
It’s not regular tiredness that a good night’s sleep can fix.

It sits in your bones. It makes the simplest tasks feel monumental. And when someone suggests exercise, it can feel like they simply don’t understand what you’re dealing with.
 
But here’s what I’ve learned, both as a nutritionist working with hundreds of women with Hashimoto’s and autoimmune thyroid conditions, and as someone who has been exactly where you are:
 
there is a safe way to add movement to your day that gives you energy rather than draining it.
 
What I recommend is that you build a movement rhythm that works for your life and your current energy levels. The best exercise for your thyroid is the one that gets your body moving. You do not need a gym membership or fancy equipment. 
 
Just a decision to start now and dedication to the process.
 
The thing is, if you are struggling with thyroid fatigue, it’s likely that typical workout routines won’t be the right fit. 
There’s a better, thyroid-friendly way though.

The root causes of autoimmune inflammation are complex and depend on your unique thyroid story, but it’s really the nervous system that keeps this cycle spinning. 😵‍💫

And it’s not a pointless attack.

It’s a defence strategy your body has put in place to protect you. And I don’t know about you, but for me that completely reframes the autoimmune game.

This is also why the strictest elimination diets, worrying about every toxin, a 20-step morning routine that feels like a chore... don’t work long term.

They stress our body further while we continue living in constant fear of food, fear of toxins, fear of failing, fear of our body betraying us.

This screams THREAT. Again and again.

But there’s a hopeful side to this reframe: We can retrain our nervous system response.

We can’t fully control what happens to us, but we can absolutely impact what happens next.

We can work with the thyroid terrain and the physiological root causes in a way that’s gentle and nervous system friendly.

Have you done my root cause quiz yet? 🧐

It’s absolutely fascinating that once we start connecting the dots, the diagnosis doesn’t seem so random anymore.

And there’s always ALWAYS an emotional element at play... something that happened in the years leading to the diagnosis that overwhelmed us and left a lasting mark...

It’s also never one thing

I know a lot of people who spent A LOT of time and money searching for that one root cause, on thing that has caused their thyroid condition.
They either stay stuck in limbo
Or they try lots o things half heartedly, convinced it won’t work anyway as the true reason has not been identified yet

The reality is that for most (all?) of us this condition is a results of multiple factors

Some within our control (our nutrition choices) some not (childhood trauma, genetics)

Yes there will be unique factors specific to our journey

But also foundational imbalances that are SHARED, like gut dysfunction (‘leaky gut’ is present with any autoimmunity), detoxification issues, hormonal imbalances, inflammation and nervous system imbalances.

Three things you can start doing today ->

👀 Pause and notice that inner dialogue. Use phrases like “I am having that thought again” to create space between you and the emotions and thoughts passing through you.

🫶 Offer yourself words of understanding rather than judgment. ‘It’s okay to make mistakes’. ‘You don’t have to get this perfect’. ‘You’re allowed to go slowly’.

🤗 Supportive self-touch. This bypasses the mind and speaks directly to the nervous system. Try butterfly tapping, a self-hug, stroking your arms slowly downward, or placing your palms over closed eyes.
