It’s the start of Disability History Month here in the UK!

Here are 3 things we could all do this month to make a difference:

1. Nominate a deserving person, people, or yourself - anywhere around the world - for a Jimmy Greer Award https://bepeoplesmart.co.uk/jimmy-greer-awards/. Let’s all celebrate these unsung heroes 👏🏻.

2. Start a conversation in your workplace about the value of disability inclusion. We don’t just mean the literal value of the Purple Pound - $13 trillion (US dollars) every year! - we mean the people and business value of inclusive cultures and ways of working 💜.

3. Take a look around you - at work, in public areas and on public transport - and if you identify an accessibility barrier, take action. Report it to the appropriate organisation, or if you feel safe to do so, let someone know if they are creating the barrier - suitcases stored in an accessible seating areas is a great example.

Together, we can create change.

The Jimmy Greer Awards are here! 🌟

At Be , we believe in celebrating the unsung heroes - the people who quietly make the world more inclusive and accessible, without expectation of recognition.

Today, in memory of Jimmy Greer (the father of our Founder, Jodie Greer), we’re proud to launch these awards to shine a light on those most deserving.

There are two award categories:
1. Workplace – for those creating positive change in organisations.
2. Community – for those making a difference in everyday life.

This isn’t about big budgets or job titles. It’s about action, heart, and the difference someone makes when they choose to stand up for inclusion and accessibility.

Are your posts making or breaking your brand?

With 1 in 5 people being disabled, if you aren’t confident in the inclusive and accessible design of your content, you are excluding a big chunk of your target audience.

I’ve heard many questions and statements like:

“Will accessibility limit my creativity?”
Absolutely not. In fact, because it will work better for you, it’s creativity at its best.

“My target audience aren’t disabled people.”
News flash - many of them are.

“How will I know if the people I’m trying to reach are disabled?”
Just know they will be.
Plus, anyone you’re reaching today may become disabled tomorrow and no longer be able to engage with your content. 83% of disabilities are acquired in adulthood.

Social media marketing can mean wearing multiple hats.

There’s the strategy behind your rhythm, the engaging copy to reach your audience, image creation to grab attention and producing videos people want to watch.

Whether you create your own content or if you create for others, here’s a free tip - if your content isn’t accessible by design you are not reaching your maximum audience.

And another free tip - if you outsource your social media, ask how they ensure your content is inclusive and accessible. If they don’t, share this post so you can reach more people.
