What is THC and why is it used in medicinal cannabis?

THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) is one of the key compounds found in cannabis and may be included in some prescribed medical cannabis treatments.

Early research suggests THC may have notable anti-inflammatory properties, with some studies indicating it could be more potent than commonly used options like aspirin and hydrocortisone. However, further research is needed to fully understand its clinical benefits and safety.

For some patients living with chronic pain, prescribed medicinal cannabis containing THC may help support symptom management when conventional treatments have not provided sufficient relief. This may include conditions such as nerve pain, arthritis and musculoskeletal pain.
