The reason behind you having PCOS?

Hard one to answer - there's not enough research out there that could give you enough of a robust answer.

Genetics can play a role but there's a whole host of other things that can set up the conditions for PCOS to thrive, none of them your fault.

The underlying cause of PCOS in many women is insulin resistance so it's generally a good place to start when trying to manage symptoms.

Things that do affect your hormones balance and therefore your PCOS symptoms:

✨ What you eat, exercise levels, stress, things you use on your skin, things you clean your house with, your sleep quality, nutrients you take✨

It's not your fault you have PCOS but you do have a choice on the conditions you put your body in to be able to better manage symptoms 💛

For a long time we've been told low fat is a good choice to lose weight

The problem is, this can lead us down a path of lots of processed foods and also miss out on the benefits that some fats can bring us

These are some examples of fats that can actually help your hormones get back into balance - they help support your cells be healthy and that leads to overall better metabolic health. Which is what you need when you have PCOS.

Losing weight when you suffer with a condition like PCOS doesn't mean choosing low fat - it's about choosing the ones that support your body ✨

These are some good choices - which ones do you already include in your diet?

PCOS is often associated with putting on weight but there's a variety of symptoms that can also be seen.

This is just a snapshot of other symptoms that can exist 🫣

Other common symptoms include bloating, fatigue, sugar cravings, sweating, sleep disruption, brain fog...the list goes on.

💣The tricky thing about PCOS is that not everyone suffers in the same way.

Some women will put on weight whilst looking at food and others won't

Some will have regular cycles and some won't have a cycle at all

Some will have facial and body hair whilst others will have no issues.

What is consistent amongst many women with PCOS is insulin resistance. This affects around 80% of women with PCOS.

So working on this can be one of the biggest things you can do to reduce your symptoms 🔥

Managing PCOS symptoms can feel overwhelming and like you're broken in some way. Hormone imbalance can be a hard thing to navigate - you never quite know if you're on the right path.

You're not broken - your body is always on your side but with PCOS it finds it harder to regulate.

There are things that affect PCOS hormone balance and you might be more sensitive to them than you realise.

What are some of the things that can affect us?

- stress
- lack of sleep
- lack of nutrients in diet
- environmental toxins
- lack of movement

Improving these things can feel super challenging, especially if you have big life things going on all at once. Change is hard!

If you want to start managing your PCOS symptoms or hormone imbalance, choose one area and see what little changes you can make that can improve it. Stick with it. Your hormones love consistency.

Nothing changes if nothing changes 💫

PCOS symptoms respond to what you drink as much as what you eat

These options all have health benefits that can be helpful to manage your PCOS

🙌🏻Water - we need to stay hydrated for overall hormone balance and straight up water is the best way to do this

🙌🏻Green tea - there's a lot of evidence showing that this can reduce testosterone, improve metabolism and weight loss (PMID 2854836)

🙌🏻Spearmint tea - research here indicates an anti androgen effect which will reduce symptoms such as acne, facial hair and hair loss (PMID 19585478)

🙌🏻Fruit infused water - make this yourself or buy it, anything that can bring you more joy in drinking more water is great! Watch out for sweeteners or added sugar in shop bought

🙌🏻Green smoothie - loading in veg helps a smoothie stay beneficial to your blood sugar balance. You can add fruit but make sure you also have some veg like spinach or kale - you can pack a lot of nutrients into one smoothie!

Spend a day looking at what you are currently drinking and consider if you can switch anything up that could be more beneficial to your hormone balance💛
