Maya Angelou was a woman and leader who knew the power of language and its ability to instigate change. She believed that language was so powerful it could get into your hair, the fabric of your furniture and permeate your soul, so she was very intentional with the words she chose and the words of others that she surrounded herself with. Oprah recalled in an interview that Maya once kicked a person out of her home for using derogatory language because she didn't want that energy from the language present in her house.
Maya also had one of the greatest grasps of the English language and used its full breadth, depth and beauty to write some of the best poems and literature that were often about her life and the universality of womanhood.
Are you specific, intentional and creative with the language you use?
Maya Angelou is an eternal beacon of light and one of the many multifaceted female pioneers that we honour today and always!
We also acknowledge that the majority of women on planet earth at this moment in time still do not have equal opportunity, equal education, equal rights and equal pay let alone true autonomy in the societies and countries in which they live. May each woman with sovereignty honour her freedom today by ensuring that we work towards freedom for all!
Happy International Women's Day!
