With just behind us let’s remember the connection between a healthy mind and a healthy body.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Stress itself doesn’t cause weight gain, neither does cortisol (a part from very specific cases).
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Without going too deep, let’s just say that stress is an absolutely normal and primordial reaction to a situation of danger...think of a lion chasing you and you have to run or fight for dear life.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The problem with it in the modern world is that unless you are the Tiger King or Carol Baskin, there is no feral animal chasing you.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Instead we usually have a consistent trigger that puts our brains and bodies into the same fight or flight mode...WORK (ta daaaa).
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
And see what I said there? CONSISTENT. Because if the lion chases you a few times a week, and the rest of times you are good, happy, eating fruit and minding your business, your body has all the tools to take you back from stressful moment —> peace.
If said lion chases you every single day 8h a day....well no wonder we get sick.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
So what us humans have discovered to face stress are COPING MECHANISMS which makes us feel good short term but might be detrimental on long term...and some actually make us gain weight either because we consume more kcals or because we do as a “side effect” of it (such as lack of sleep).
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
What I do with my clients first is to set good habits before starting the weight loss journey, such as good sleep hygiene or mindfulness.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
But the real key to success is FLEXIBILITY. If you are too rigid with your methods and chase perfection, you will just put a lot of pressure on yourself and you will give up at the first mistake.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
By staying as flexible as your schedule goes, you will always have a solution for when...well...sh*t happens!
