Anxiety runs high in so many kids these days and sometimes a child’s anxiety does not respond to the usual nutrition and gut work.

And even when the food is nutritious, the supplements are in place and the gut is happier, they still feel anxious and on edge much of the time.

That is when we at NatureDoc go looking for the deeper drivers of anxiety from infections to metabolic reasons.

If this is your child, this week’s blog is essential reading.

Could an infection be driving your child's anxiety? Learn how PANS & PANDAS trigger sudden anxiety, OCD & tics, and how nutrition can help.

🥗Happy Tummy Caesar Salad🥗
This fresh, crunchy Caesar salad makes a brilliant lunch or light supper.

The hero at the heart of this salad is the creamy, flavour-packed Caesar dressing using gut-friendly Greek yoghurt, and I have switched out the croutons for pumpkin seeds to add some zinc and keep the recipe lower-carb.

😔How kids’ tummy health affects their brains and anxiety😔
If your child has both a worried mind and a wobbly tummy, then there could be a close connection.

This is because their gut and their brain talk to each other constantly, and when the gut is inflamed or harbouring the wrong bacteria, the brain feels it and your child’s anxiety spirals.

In my 30 years of clinical work, I have found that sorting out the gut is often the single best way to move the needle for anxious kids and teens.

This week's blog explains why, and what you can do as parents, to help them feel calm and safe.

Discover how the gut–brain axis shapes your child's anxiety. Learn how gut bacteria affect mood and what parents can do to help.

🥕Seeded Carrot Cake Muffins🥕
These little muffins pack everything that should be in a proper carrot cake into a perfect handheld bite, with warm cinnamon, fragrant mixed spice and sweet sultanas tucked through every mouthful.

I love how the mixed seeds crown the muffins with an irresistible crunchy topping contrasted against the soft sponge underneath.

With less sugar and blood sugar-balancing spices, this is a recipe you will bake on repeat!

If your child wakes up worrying about school, they melt down over the smallest changes to their routine, or they lie awake at night with a busy brain, then the food on their plate is one of the most powerful tools you have to help them feel calmer.

After 30 years in clinical practice, I keep seeing the same pattern that when a child’s key nutrients are running low, their nervous system simply cannot hold itself steady enough, and that is where the panic and the crushing anxiety kicks in. The good news is that the right nutrition and daily habits can change their picture quickly, and you start to see a calmer more confident kid.

This week’s blog is part 1 of a 3 part series - it walks you through the nutrients I look at first when a child is presenting with anxiety and rumination, and the everyday habits that help to reduce the rawness of anxiety.

Discover how key nutrients can help reduce anxiety in children and support a calmer, more confident kid — one mouthful at a time.

🥛Vanilla Ice Cream Milkshake🥛
This thick, creamy vanilla milkshake makes a cooling summer drink that your tribe will adore!

It tastes like melted vanilla ice cream with a gentle caramel sweetness from the maple syrup and with lots of goodness tucked inside.

Enjoy a proper old-fashioned glass of milky goodness!

It’s 3 o’clock in the afternoon and your screen is blurring with your brain close behind. That packet of biscuits is looking pretty tempting: you could have just one – that would be fine, wouldn’t it? Except it’s pretty unlikely to be just one, more like four (or more).

That mid-afternoon dip in energy and focus is the moment when your best intentions are most likely to crack, and it’s all too easy to reach for the sweet stuff: biscuits, sweets, left over Easter eggs…

To learn my best snack hacks, hop over to Beauty Bible where I am guest columnist this week.

We all know that moment, often mid-afternoon, when your brain sinks into go very slow and there’s a big temptation to go for sugary snacks. We asked family naturopath Lucinda Miller, author of Brain Brilliance, to suggest snacks to get you over blood sugar dips without raiding the biscuit tin.

The new Autism figures have just been released and 1 in 16 children (in Northern Ireland) are now autistic. That’s 6.2% which is nearly double the US rate of 1 in 31.

And for boys? It’s now 1 in 11! (1 in 11.6 to be precise).

To put that in perspective, the National Autistic Society still say 1 in 100 people are autistic and in the 1980’s only 1 in 10,000 people had an autism diagnosis.

81% of autistic children in Northern Ireland also have additional educational needs, so this is a huge number of kids who need specialist education and therapies.

Whether you believe this rise is down to better diagnosis, environmental factors, or both, one thing is clear - more families than ever before need support raising their kids.

If your sports-mad child has been sidelined by a stress fracture, or they keep coming home from training with a deep, nagging ache in their shin, foot, lower back or hip that won’t settle, this could be a tiny crack in the bone caused by overtraining.

A stress fracture can mean weeks off games, in a walking boot or on crutches and watching training sessions from the sidelines – so alongside the stress fracture, you will probably also have a very grumpy and frustrated youngster on your hands.

The good news is that stress fractures are almost never just bad luck, and there is growing evidence that nutrition plays a vital role in both recovering from and preventing these painful bone injuries.

In this week’s blog, I want to walk you through what is actually driving stress fractures in young athletes, which nutritional gaps we see most consistently in the clinic, and the practical steps you can start working on this week to support recovery and to protect their bones going forward.
