OF COURSE going to a yoga class is yoga practice. To be led by a teacher in a safe space can be just 👌🏽 and I love facilitating this (obviously). Have you ever thought yoga practice is also happening off the mat, all the time too? It’s just in a less concentrated and focused manner (and with less chair pose). In real life all your tools are there to be used, which is why the practice is so beneficial.

When you understand the philosophy of yoga, you realise yoga is not just helpful for how you understand yourself in 🪑 pose, but it’s how you approach life and the decisions you make daily —how you handle the when you don’t get that job you already decided in your head you got, when the train breaks down and you begin to feel anger for the meeting you’re late for, when there are awful things happening in the world and you feel helpless, or when you’re just in a bad mood and don’t know why.

Yoga teaches us about impermanence and the nature of life. It helps us understand that our current feelings won’t always be the same, and that many things are not in our control. It’s not to say we should approach challenges with apathy but with knowledge that we only have control over our next action, not the outcome. Rather than being overwhelmed and negative about things not going our way—we build awareness, understanding, and acceptance of what is—and then take our next step forward with more ease.

Of course sometimes the body craves movement, and moving can help you feel more present and grounded—that’s why yoga practice exists and works! You’re also practising tools on the mat and applying them in real life.

The constant thread in my classes is ‘be here’, ‘return your attention back’, to help you build awareness of ‘what is’. You can do the same in everyday life.

Has something happened for you recently, off the mat, where you’ve realised, ‘Ah, that’s yoga!’?

CHOICE is what matters.

Is choice coming from you or are you desperately trying to get your heels flat to the ground because it’s often deemed ‘right’? Can you tune into your body and trust your intuition to direct you and then decide if grounding your heels aligns with you in the moment?

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not discouraging flattening your heels to the ground – it can be a valid exploration. Notice the thoughts and sensations that rise, and the source of your choice. Understanding ‘why’ is not always but tuning in gets us a little closer.

Even when I’m demonstrating downdog, I can still feel the desire to ram my heels to the ground 😂, a habit rooted from the need to make it look ‘best’(when it often doesn’t feel best for me). It gets easier to catch those moments, watch those thoughts rise, and then allow what feels right to direct me.

I’ll always give guidance and suggestions but always leave a lot of room for choice, as what and how you explore in your practice is ultimately yours.

Have you found yourself ramming your heels to the ground when you actually didn’t want to? 😅

RESPECT 🙏🏽 — at my yoga retreats there aren’t really ‘rules,’ but if there’s one, it’s: no pressure.

Valuing our own and others’ time during a retreat is really important to me. We each have our own reasons for going on a yoga retreat. Perhaps to gift ourselves more quiet and space or lean into connection and exploration. For some it’s a solo trip or it’s yoga alongside family (mum and daughter combo is very common + very cute) or friends.

There’s no need to fill every waking moment with activities (although big shoutout to those who thrive on that, I see you) and there’s certainly no expectation to practice yoga postures all day long (people do ask me this ha).

The structure at my retreat is morning and evening yoga classes, plus breakfast, lunch, and dinner. There are options to chill, explore surroundings, socialise, with some optional workshops/activites but you are not obliged. You do what feels right for you in the moment— that’s also my philosophy when teaching classes.

Part of the retreat experience is to reflect, tune into yourself, and embrace simplicity – you can have this in small doses or all day if you like. The nice thing is that you can drift in and out to your liking, so there is space for discussion, laughter, adventure and solo time (it’s a retreat after all).

To those already booked for my retreats this year – I can’t wait to have you! And if you’re still in decision mode, this is your formal invite to join the gang and fire away with any questions!

People tell me how reassured they are when they arrive at my retreats and meet the variety of people there. They realise it’s not a bunch of people dressed like they’re going to a yoga photoshoot, balancing on their hands from the crack of dawn 😂.

It’s not a holiday for people who are ‘good at yoga’. There are people new to the practice, some who dip in and out, and yes some who practice very regularly and have for a long time. The common thread is that they are interested in yoga and from my experience I see a lot of compassion, openness, and pure joy of just being there. Remember you deserve to be at a yoga retreat as much as anyone else!

A retreat gives you time to take a deeper look at your own unique practice, continue to learn and understand your relationship to the teachings of yoga, and explore new things (arm balances or not). There is a loose structure – yoga and food (isn’t it great to just be cooked for??) – and the rest unfolds however you like – relax or explore.

Have you been on a retreat before? Did you have any concerns that faded once you got there?

Check out the retreats I have coming up and let me know if you have any questions

I’ve experienced all the different feelings that go along with the poses (and still do sometimes of course) – standing leg has to be straight, hips have to be perfectly level, the fear of falling. What if your practice was about having an experience (e.g. moving into a shape) and being with, noticing, and adapting from your self-direction, no matter the outcome? Yes easy to say, hard to do!

It’s a relief when you realise there’s no universal ‘right way’ for a pose, because we’re all unique. What matters is whether you’re attuned to your experience:
• Are the choices you are making being directed from within you as well as my cues?
• Does what you’re doing feel safe for your body or are you ignoring pain just for a straighter line?
• Can you be here with this pose even if it feels and might look different to before?

I am just here to guide, suggest, and help you find what feels right in the moment.

I’m not saying don’t aim for a perfectly straight line I’m just saying it doesn’t really matter how it looks. You can’t see whether you’re in a perfect line, but you can feel your pose – so why not channel your energy into that awareness?

Have you ever become so obsessed that a pose must be ‘perfect’?

Had some inspiring conversations with people over the last week which continues to leave me with a reminder to myself (and everyone who needs to hear) to 👏🏽 keep doing what you’re doing 👏🏽 — do you, live your life/path (in yoga philosophy we call this dharma) and not someone else’s.

When vritti (movements, fluctuations of the mind) kicks up and leads to things like insecurity, jealously, a feeling of ‘less than’ it keeps us stuck, held back, confused. Sometimes it feels like I have no idea what I’m doing 😂 but then I remind myself to just take the next step in the direction that feels right ↗️ it’s scary but it’s also liberating.

I’ve always made a point to students to rest, opt out, do ‘their version’ (even though this takes time to find), do their own thing when they practice in class. The things I offer in class really are suggestions. It gives me joy when I can sense/feel someone taking the thing that just feels right in the moment.

I notice people do it more often once they realise it’s actually quite liberating and freeing when you feel into curiosity, openness, and exploration (within reason of course, it might be a bit odd if you start to jump around whilst everyone else is in Shavasana 👀).

At first it might feel uncomfortable — e.g. picking a more restful place when everyone else around you is in dolphin pose kicking up (and I get that) or you might get the sense you’re not ‘doing the work’, but you are! The work is in the choice to do you without the pressure of what everyone else around you is doing (and it can feel really uncomfortable even after years of practice).

Do you find it hard to choose the thing that just feels right in your body or do you usually easily surrender to it?

📸

PS 🐬 this also counts if you’re choosing to feel into dolphin pose when I guide downdog — if you’re there you’re there and I’m not gonna say or think ‘excuse me do exactly what I say’
