Why volunteering is part of my work
Volunteering has always been a big part of my counselling career, not just during training and placement, but after having qualified as well, to gain further skills and experience, and to be part of something bigger than myself.
For the past year, I have been a volunteer counsellor with Burning Nights CRPS, supporting people living with CRPS (Complex Regional Pain Syndrome). CRPS is a condition that can be life changing, isolating, and often misunderstood. Being able to offer a safe space for people facing a life-changing diagnosis, and supporting them to navigate pain, identity shifts, and relational issues is important to me.
It’s also meaningful because I know that, in the current economic climate, not everyone can afford counselling. Volunteering is one small way I can contribute to making support more accessible.
A postcard arrived today from the organisation, and I felt genuinely honoured. I’m proud to be part of a community doing such important work.
