Why volunteering is part of my work

Volunteering has always been a big part of my counselling career, not just during training and placement, but after having qualified as well, to gain further skills and experience, and to be part of something bigger than myself.

For the past year, I have been a volunteer counsellor with Burning Nights CRPS, supporting people living with CRPS (Complex Regional Pain Syndrome). CRPS is a condition that can be life changing, isolating, and often misunderstood. Being able to offer a safe space for people facing a life-changing diagnosis, and supporting them to navigate pain, identity shifts, and relational issues is important to me.

It’s also meaningful because I know that, in the current economic climate, not everyone can afford counselling. Volunteering is one small way I can contribute to making support more accessible.

A postcard arrived today from the organisation, and I felt genuinely honoured. I’m proud to be part of a community doing such important work.

Am I the only one who just wants to be horizontal all day...?!

I don't know about you but I've been quite drained by the heat and just about coping with having the fan blowing on me and never opening my curtains!

A reminder that in this heat, even machines like laptops and phones can overheat and break down - how much more us humans!

Give yourself grace as we head into the weekend, that if you don't achieve your plans, or do as much as you usually do, that's ok.

So you've gotten the courage to set boundaries, but things are still not changing?

Perhaps it is because of the lack of follow-through. Learn what to do instead.

Therapy isn’t just about listening to the words you say. There’s a whole internal process happening for me as a therapist in the room with you.

• I’m paying attention to what feels heavy for you.

• I am making sense of your world based on your history.

• I’m noticing what I am picking up from your nervous system

• I’m offering co-regulation with my pacing, tone. and breathing.

• I’m curious about what you may be holding back or protecting.

And so much more.

This is one of the reasons therapy works. It isn’t just cognitive insight, but it’s a relational, nervous system shaping experience. An encounter that helps you feel safer, softer, and more understood.

I have had such a lovely week away in Norway surrounded by nature and have come back feeling fully refreshed!

It was a week being mostly unplugged with limited internet access, and it just reminded me to be present, and to slow down.
I hope these prompts help you to slow down and be present too.

Faith is a part of many people’s stories, and it should be held with care and respect.

In my work, I hold space for you bring your whole self to the room, and that includes your faith and spirituality, however it looks.

You never have to hide your beliefs with me, and you can give voice to any doubts and questions you may have.

Whether faith is a steady anchor, or something you’re still figuring out, it can take up as much or as little space in the room – it is your choice.

* What people get wrong about boundaries *

A boundary is not about controlling someone’s behaviour.

As a therapist I often hear people talk about setting boundaries (and I go, yay!) but then I realise what they’re actually talking about are limits, not boundaries.

‘Stop talking to me about your ex-girlfriend, I don’t want to talk about it!’

This is not a boundary – this is a request for them to stop their behaviour.

A boundary communicates what your behaviour is.

‘If you continue to talk to me about your ex, I am going to go home.’

This is a boundary. It’s about what you will do in response to what’s happening.

We can’t control other people. We can only take responsibility for our own actions, our own choices, and what we will or won’t tolerate.

That’s what a boundary actually is.

Have you been setting boundaries? Or were you simply setting limits?

You don’t have to earn rest

We all get tired. It's natural. And when we are tired, we need to rest.

But in a society that praises grind, productivity and hard work, we don't often see rest and relaxation having any place of use.

Being raised in an Asian culture where productivity and busyness is default, I have had to learn what rest means to me. Yes – I had to LEARN to rest. I had to intentionally put in non-negotiable breaks after I experienced burnout a few years ago and learn, just like learning to play the guitar or to ride a bike, I had to learn to rest.

A big one for me was remembering that I don’t have to earn rest. May this be a reminder for you too, as we head in to the weekend, that you can just rest, you don’t have to earn it first.
