Marcus Veda & Rocket Yoga London Breathe, move, seat, repeat. Rocket-fuelled vinyasa in London town.

The ROCKET system is considered to be the original power yoga, created by Larry Shultz of ‘Its Yoga, San Francisco’ to free up the traditional Ashtanga yoga series as pioneered by Sri Pattabhi Jois. Like when Ray Davies of the Kinks discovered distorted guitar by smashing in the speaker cone on his amp, and Grandmaster Flash cut a few old records together and came-up with a brand new one, Larry Sc

hultz came up with “The Rocket” when he took the beautiful ingredients of Ashtanga and cooked-up something a bit different; A new flavour anyone could get into. Purists may complain that Hip Hop stole everything by sampling from already great records, but others thank those pioneers for taking the best bits and introducing us to beats, breaks and music we’d never have known; maybe even doing something more visceral and exciting in the process. So it is with The Rocket system: The new doesn’t have to replace the old- it just gives you something else to dance to.

It’s seen a lot of places and faces over the past nine years. Starting back in , moving to then and finally , Sunday Service was always an evening thing. But now, your 108 mins of spiritual flow has moved to 10am UK. It’s a new dawn, it’s a new day and I’m feeling good.
I hope you can make it to the new morning service. For those that can’t, it will be recorded for on demand at my (book through my link in bio.)

Holding Space: maybe not my favourite yoga phrase, but def the best book I’ve read for teachers, new and old, on finding, using, training and saving your voice. talks vocabulary and inclusive language, to posture and body language...
How to embody your teaching.
“In yoga asana practice we are literally using postures to shift our consciousness... to improve our overall health and strengthen our bodily systems, as well as using them to shift moods, the flow of energy, our perspective and our sense of connection”. What does your posture say about you?
We have just added this book to our 200hr TT reading list (Start date has now moved to April.) If you are interested in joining us, follow the link in my bio for more details.

Handstands Save the World.... are you doing it yet?
Big up to Anna Murphy’s Law for explaining why everyone is either hooked or in denial. If a yoga teacher ever tells you there are more important things in life than a handstand, they are lying. It’s my meditation posture of choice. And we will be falling out of them all week. See you in class.

Once again we join together in the powerful pranayama technique of ananda breathing - kapalabhati in unison, inter-weaved with a “Nyasa” meditation up the spine (sushumna) taking the mind to a heightened level of clarity.*
You may experience states of bliss, transcendence, or simple peace. Be prepared to peel away the layers to pure consciousness.
As Swami Karunananda says, "Asana is meditation on the physical body, pranayama is meditation on the breath and subtle energy currents within us; then we work with the mind directly, with the ultimate aim of transcending both body and mind and experiencing the higher Self."
This workshop is for people with a yoga breathing practice of at least one year. It is not suitable if you are pregnant or for individuals prone to anxiety, panic attacks or mental instability, or those with high blood pressure, heart disease, hernia, gastric ulcer, epilepsy, vertigo, significant nosebleeds, detached retina, glaucoma, recent abdominal surgery, and anyone at risk for stroke.
*Kapalabhati Pranayama, also known as Skull Shining Breath, is an energizing breathing practice that clears the lungs, the nasal passages, and the mind. In Sanskrit, Kapal means "cranium" or "forehead" and bhati means "light," ‘"perception," and "knowledge." Kapalabhati is said to bring lightness and clarity to the frontal region of the brain.

Changing your point of view is not easy.
Samskaras are the habits, patterns, impressions and addictions that play out throughout our lives. Every action we take or intention we make leaves behind a Samskara like an indelible inky spot. Left unchecked, these karmic imprints, or impressions on the mind, linger throughout our lives, motivating what we do, dictating our reactions. Not all patterns are bad, but we want to look out for the repetition of the damaging ones. The first step is, as always, in the noticing. Sometimes you have to change things up in a small way, just to make sure the old way is still serving you. Come into a pose another way, take the other side, see things from a different perspective.

Flying Warrior is my power pose. What’s yours?
We all knew it was coming, but "Lockdown- the sequel" is finally upon us. People are concerned that this time around it is winter and so won't be as much FUN as it was back in the Summer of Love when Covid (or Corona as it was then fondly called) was fresh and new. But these are clearly people who don't have children because THIS time the schools/nurseries are staying open, so I for one will be staying at home and living the student life, without any responsibilities demanding food or attention. Its 100% "we-time" and if you are like me then that means all the self care you can fit into the long list of things you still haven't got round to since round 1. And all the yoga we want on Zoom.
Even if you are unlucky enough to still have a job, you know by now that they have no idea where you are or what you are really doing, because of the freedom granted to us all by the "video off" option in our favourite portal. All you need to do is log in to that yawning mid-morning work meeting from one device and let it roll, as you hop-on to 90mins of guilt-free personal growth and productivity enhancement on your other device. Your boss knows deep down that what is best for you is best for the company. Zoom Yoga is the capitalist choice. If you care about the economy, you have to care for yourself first.
So, as you find yourself chained to your LCD window to the world, driven to multi-tab distraction and lost in the art of self-isolated procrastination, choose yoga: the one decision you will never regret. If you still haven't tried it online, have a go, the first one's free* and you might just be surprised. It's a lot better than you think. And it's all we have.
Coming to a screen near you, Lockdown Yoga on Zoom, it might be the only way out.

*my own Zoom classes are pay what you can, or try before you buy. Link in bio

Final Day
We’ve come a long way, baby. It’s exam day on the 200hr foundation vinyasa YTT. We began in March as Corona hit. Rescheduled, relocated, socially distanced, Zoomed in, zoomed out, rebranded to Covid, bonded, persevered and brought it home the week of the second lockdown 🏁 Thank god for yoga.
Today a brand new bunch of teachers graduate into a brave new world. There’s something magical about seeing it all come together.

Sunday Service is making way for the Class of 2020 graduation ceremony 🎓returning next week for full lockdown love-in.

Read This.
Maybe it’s a London thing, but of the slew of books recommended to me in the last 6 months, this is the one that hit home. Thanks for turning me onto ‘s resonant masterpiece. I swear I used to play some of his records - Akala the Don...? - but this is like getting a historical re-education from someone who grew up in my part of the world. He tells it how it is, and reminded me how it really was.

Mysore head
Self practice renamed by the rambunctious TTs this week. There is nothing quite like a flow to the sound of beats and breath. Sync’d in.
Many new t-shirt slogans and an impressive bunch of new teachers emerging.
And I’m back for Sunday Service today 5pm....
