Melisa Diagnostics

Melisa Diagnostics MELISA is supporting pioneering research in the field of metal hypersensitivity.

The aim of MELISA Diagnostics is to raise awareness about how metal hypersensitivity can play a key role in the development of disease, and how MELISA testing is an essential tool, which can be used to confirm hypersensitivity. The MELISA test is used worldwide by dentists, doctors and surgeons to diagnose whether a patient is intolerant to materials commonly used in dental restorations and surgic

al implants. Further applications of the test include diagnosis of Lyme disease (Borrelia) and allergy to gluten and moulds.

The UN Minamata Convention has agreed a worldwide ban on the manufacture and trade of mercury-containing dental amalgam from 1 January 2035. The EU already ended use and export from 1 January 2025, so why wait another 10 years for a ban when there are safer alternatives for dental restorations?

The decision represents an important milestone in protecting human health and the environment from the harmful impacts of mercury.

Our latest newsletter brings together new research and real-life stories that highlight how our immune system interacts with our internal and external environment.

From overlooked immune reactions in joint replacements to hidden metals in tattoo inks, we explore how small exposures can have big effects - and how awareness and testing can help patients and clinicians make better choices.

We also cover major health updates, including the CDC’s move to phase out the mercury-based preservative thimerosal, and share practical insights from experts on choosing safe, biocompatible dental materials. We hope you enjoy it!

Our immune system’s “brakes” - and why this year’s nobel prize in matters.

This year’s Nobel Prize in Medicine went to three scientists - Mary Brunkow, Fred Ramsdell, and Shimon Sakaguchi - for discovering how our immune system keeps itself in balance.

They found a special type of white blood cell called a regulatory T cell. Think of it as the brake pedal of your immune system: it stops your body from over-reacting or attacking its own healthy tissues.

That idea connects directly to MELISA testing, which measures how your immune cells (T cells) respond to metals or other environmental triggers that have bound to enzymes and proteins in your body. MELISA looks for an over-reaction; an immune memory that’s too strong.

The work by the prize winning scientists helps explain why that happens in some people: the “brake” cells aren’t doing their job properly.

Understanding those T-cells - both the accelerators and the brakes - is key to building healthier immune responses for all of us.

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has voted against the use of the mercury-containing preservative thimerosal in vaccines: an important step in limiting exposure to this known neurotoxin. Although removed from childhood vaccines in 2001, it’s still present in some flu shots. The presentations raises several important issues:

• Although used in vaccines since the 1930s, thimerosal was never formally tested in controlled clinical safety trials before introduction
• Studies from 1982 flagged thimerosal as not generally recognised as safe and effective when used topically
• There is evidence suggesting ineffectiveness as a preservative

Titanium dioxide will finally be removed from Skittles in the US. Titanium dioxide in food was banned in the EU in 2022, due to a link between exposure and adverse health effects. Titanium dioxide is frequently added to a number of foods, including confectionaries, chewing gum, food supplements and cake icing and is present in many medications as a tablet coating agent under the label "E171". Titanium dioxide is also found in cosmetics including sunscreen, usually listed as "CI77891". Sadly, in the UK, there has been no similar ban.

Confectionery giant Mars said it had stopped using titanium dioxide in its Skittles portfolio in the US.

📑 New research analyzing 15 years of data reveals pierced earrings could be behind the surge in metal allergies!

🌎 While the European Union enforces strict regulations on nickel release from jewelry, Japan lacks similar protections and the US only regulates metal content (especially lead) in children's jewelry - falling short of the EU's comprehensive nickel standards.

👂 A comprehensive study from Japan just published eye-opening findings - inflammation from pierced earrings has skyrocketed from 5% to 43% of patients with suspected metal allergies between 2005-2020!

Even more concerning: 81% of people who experienced inflammation from their pierced earrings tested positive for metal allergies, compared to 60% without earring issues.

The culprits? Metals like nickel, palladium, chromium and cobalt commonly found in jewelry.

👉If your pierced ears show signs of redness, itching, or irritation, your earrings might be causing a metal allergy that could impact your overall health, not just your earlobes.

💓 Optimising cardiovascular health with ecological medicine

Last Friday, Linda Nelson, MD of MELISA Diagnostics participated in the British Society for Ecological Medicine (BSEM) conference on "Ecological Medicine: Approaches to Cardiovascular Health."

🦷 Dentist Dr Goran Stojanovic highlighted the importance of dealing with inflammation in the mouth due to the established connection between oral and cardiovascular health. Metal toxicity as well as metal sensitivity can be caused by dental metals and here MELISA is a useful tool for identifying at-risk patients.

🫀 The event highlighted how nutrition, supplements and detoxification can support cardiovascular health and discussed the protective properties of cholesterol in cancer and stroke. Other outstanding speakers included Dr Sanjay Gupta .sanjay.gupta (Consultant Cardiologist), Dr Damien Downing, Dr Jerry Thompson and Dr Sarah Myhill , all sharing practical clinical applications and highlighting the importance of listening to your patient.

The day concluded with an interactive BSEM Panel Discussion chaired by Dr Shideh Pouria, where complex cases were explored and clinical challenges addressed.

🙏 It was wonderful to meet again with fellow professionals and contribute to discussion on integrative approaches to cardiovascular health!

⬇ For those who missed it, the lectures can be watched from the recording (purchase required). The link to the trailer is below in comments. ⬇

🔬 The future of joint replacements: Exploring metal-free options 🔬

If you have a metal allergy or sensitivity, the idea of getting a traditional joint implant can be concerning. Inflammation, pain, and even implant rejection are real risks for some patients. While metal allergy testing can help identify potential issues, what if there were better implant alternatives? 🤔

✨ New advancements in metal-free, 3D-printed implants are offering hope. One of our recent posts highlighted a patient who found relief with an OXPEKK® implant from Oxford Performance Materials—a material designed to be biocompatible, durable, and more compatible with natural bone. 🦴

🔍 These solutions are still evolving, and long-term studies are ongoing. But for those looking for options beyond metal, the future of joint replacement is starting to change.

🔬 Important Health Discovery: Rethinking "Safe" Mercury Levels

👩‍🔬 Researchers at King's College London have made a concerning discovery: even mercury levels currently considered "safe" can affect how our skin cells function at the molecular level.

⚠️ By studying over 800 twins, we found that low-level mercury exposure impacts hundreds of genes specifically in skin tissue, particularly affecting how our cells produce energy. This is the first study to show these effects in healthy individuals with normal mercury exposure.

🧐 Most surprising? These changes happen at levels well below current safety thresholds.
