🌿 ACTIVATED CHARCOAL – WHAT DOES IT ACTUALLY DO?

Activated charcoal has a highly porous surface that can bind, or “adsorb”, certain substances within the digestive tract, which is why it has long been used medically in specific circumstances and many people use a charcoal cleanse to help detox their system.

Outside of medical use, some people choose a short activated charcoal programme as part of their digestive wellbeing routine and may report feeling less bloated, lighter or more comfortable.

💧 Hydration is particularly important.
Activated charcoal can contribute to constipation in some people, so maintaining good fluid intake while using it is essential. So before embarking on a charcoal cleanse it’s advised to have a chat with your colonic therapist first.

🌿 And what about colonic hydrotherapy?
Some people choose to follow their charcoal programme with a colonic hydrotherapy treatment as part of their wider wellbeing routine. This is an individual choice rather than something everyone needs, and an ARCH Registered Colon Hydrotherapist will always carry out an appropriate consultation first.

⚠️ One important consideration: activated charcoal can bind to some medications and supplements and reduce their absorption. Anyone taking medication should therefore seek appropriate advice from their therapist first.

💙 Good digestive wellbeing is never about one product or treatment — hydration, nutrition, movement and healthy bowel habits all matter too.

💙 MYTH MONDAY

❌ MYTH: “If I’m passing wind, I can’t be constipated.”

💙 FACT: You can still pass wind even when you’re constipated.

Passing wind simply means that gas is able to move through and leave the bowel. It doesn’t necessarily tell us how effectively stool is moving through or being emptied.

Constipation isn’t only about not having a bowel movement.

You may still open your bowels regularly and experience constipation if stools are hard or difficult to pass, you need to strain, or you regularly feel that you haven’t emptied completely.

Some people who are constipated may actually notice more bloating and wind, as stool remains in the colon for longer and gas can accumulate around it.

So being able to pass wind doesn’t automatically mean everything is moving as efficiently as it should.

💩 Bowel health is about more than simply how often you go.

Pay attention to stool consistency, ease of passing, straining, bloating and whether you feel completely emptied afterwards.

Persistent or unexplained changes in your bowel habits should always be discussed with an appropriate healthcare professional.

🌿 August Yoga Pose of the Month: Triangle Pose (Trikonasana)

As summer begins to wind down, Triangle Pose (Trikonasana) reminds us to stay grounded while remaining open to change and on this video the lovely Kelly from demonstrates this gentle pose for us 💚

This strong standing posture helps to improve balance and stability, lengthen and open the sides of the body, and create space through the hips, chest and spine. It can also gently support healthy digestion by encouraging movement and awareness through the abdominal area.

Triangle Pose invites us to find the balance between strength and softness, stability and ease — qualities that can support us both on and off the mat. 🧘‍♀️

✨ A reminder for August:
Stay grounded. Stay open. Find strength in your stability and freedom in your movement.

💚 WHY ARE MANY ARCH THERAPISTS ALSO REGISTERED WITH THE GNC?

You may notice that many ARCH Registered Colon Hydrotherapists also display the GNC logo—but what does this mean for you?

The General Naturopathic Council (GNC) is a professional standards body for naturopathic practice in the UK. ARCH is one of its recognised professional associations, allowing eligible ARCH members to register as Associate Naturopaths.

GNC registration provides an additional layer of professional accountability. Registrants are expected to:

✅ Follow professional and ethical standards
✅ Practise safely and within their training
✅ Complete ongoing professional development
✅ Appear on a public practitioner register
✅ Be accountable through a formal complaints procedure

For the public, this offers added reassurance that their therapist is committed to high standards, transparency and professional conduct.

GNC registration does not mean that a therapist is a medical doctor or replace conventional medical care. It represents a voluntary commitment to additional professional oversight.

💙 Professional standards
🧡 Public reassurance
💙 Greater accountability

💙 HEALTH DOESN’T ALWAYS CHANGE OVERNIGHT

We often think of illness as something that suddenly happens.

But changes within the body can sometimes develop quietly over time, long before we become aware of obvious symptoms.

Our gut plays an important role in our overall health. It interacts closely with the immune system, contributes to the regulation of inflammation, and the trillions of microorganisms within our gut produce substances that can influence processes throughout the body.

Research continues to uncover just how complex the relationship is between the gut microbiome, immunity, inflammation and our wider health.

🌿 This is why supporting digestive health isn’t simply about what happens in the bathroom.

Good nutrition, hydration, regular movement, sleep, stress management and appropriate healthcare can all form part of looking after our overall wellbeing.

Some people also choose colonic hydrotherapy as part of their personal approach to digestive wellbeing.

Colonic hydrotherapy does not treat or cure disease, but it may form part of an individual’s wider self-care routine alongside healthy lifestyle choices.

✨ Looking after your health isn’t only about responding when something goes wrong — it’s about supporting your wellbeing along the way.

💙 MYTH MONDAY

❌ MYTH: “If my poo looks normal, my bowel must be healthy.”

💙 FACT: There’s more to bowel health than what you see in the toilet.

The appearance and consistency of your stool can certainly tell us something about how your digestive system is functioning — but it’s only one piece of the puzzle.

Healthy bowel function can also involve:

💩 How often you open your bowels
🚽 How easily you can pass a stool
💨 Whether you regularly experience bloating or excessive wind
⚠️ Whether you experience urgency
😣 Whether you need to strain
🔄 Whether you feel completely emptied afterwards
📈 And importantly, whether there has been a persistent change from what is normal for you

Someone can therefore pass a perfectly formed-looking stool and still experience difficulties with their bowel function.

And remember — bowel habits vary from person to person. There isn’t one bowel pattern that everybody needs to achieve.

The important thing is to know what’s normal for you and pay attention when something persistently changes.

Persistent changes in bowel habit, unexplained bleeding, ongoing abdominal pain or unexplained weight loss should always be discussed with an appropriate healthcare professional.

💙 Your poo can tell you something — but it doesn’t tell you everything.

☀️💧 HOT WEATHER & YOUR BOWELS — ARE YOU DRINKING ENOUGH?

With the warm weather continuing, staying well hydrated is important for your whole body — including your bowel.

Your large bowel naturally absorbs water from the contents passing through it. If you become dehydrated, stools can become drier, harder and more difficult to pass, which may contribute to constipation.

During hot weather, we lose more fluid through sweating, so our bodies may need more fluid than usual.

💧 Support your hydration by:

• Drinking regularly throughout the day rather than waiting until you’re very thirsty.
• Keeping water nearby when you’re out and about.
• Increasing fluids when you’re sweating more than usual.
• Including water-rich foods such as cucumber, tomatoes, melon, berries and oranges.

And remember, fibre and fluid work together. Increasing fibre without drinking enough may actually make constipation worse for some people.

🌿 Your bowel needs water too — so while you’re enjoying the sunshine, don’t forget to keep your glass topped up.

💙 Good hydration is one of the simplest everyday habits that can help support healthy bowel function.

💙 WHY ARE WE STILL EMBARRASSED TO TALK ABOUT OUR BOWELS AND POO HABITS!

From an early age, many of us learn that anything involving poo, wind or toilet habits should remain private.

We may worry about sounding rude, being judged or discovering that something isn’t “normal”. But bowel movements are a completely natural bodily function—and talking about them shouldn’t feel shameful.

Changes in your bowel habits can offer important clues about your hydration, diet, medication, stress levels and digestive health. Staying silent may mean living with uncomfortable symptoms or delaying a conversation that could help.

At ARCH, our registered colon hydrotherapists understand that discussing bowel health can feel personal. They provide a professional, respectful and non-judgemental space where you can speak openly about your symptoms and concerns.

🌿 The more openly we talk about bowel health, the more normal the conversation becomes.

Your bowel health matters—and there’s no need to be embarrassed.

💩 WHY DO I SOMETIMES NEED A POO STRAIGHT AFTER EATING?

Have you ever finished a meal and suddenly felt the urge to open your bowels?

It can feel as though the food you’ve just eaten has travelled straight through you — but it hasn’t.

Eating and stretching the stomach can trigger the gastrocolic reflex. This natural response signals the colon to increase movement, helping move stool that’s already in your large bowel towards the re**um.

It can be particularly noticeable after breakfast, when bowel activity naturally increases after waking, and larger meals may sometimes produce a stronger response.

🌿 Not everyone experiences this in the same way. Some people regularly need the toilet after eating, while others rarely notice the reflex at all.

Your bowel has its own individual patterns and rhythms, and understanding what’s normal for you is an important part of digestive health.

💙 So your breakfast hasn’t travelled through you in ten minutes — it may simply have reminded your colon that it’s time to get moving!
