How can we make hepatitis B care more accessible and community-centred? Tackling stigma and discrimination is an essential part of the answer.

The World Hepatitis Alliance recently presented findings from its 2024 pilot stigma survey at the hepatitis B (HBV) Care Meeting, during a presentation titled “The Role of Stigma and Discrimination Related to Hepatitis B: Results from a Pilot Survey.” The survey, conducted in partnership with the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC), highlights how stigma can affect people’s relationships, wellbeing and access to healthcare.

Understanding and addressing these barriers is vital to building trusted, inclusive, community-centred services and ensuring that everyone affected by hepatitis B can access the care and support they need. Liver cancer is the third most common cause of cancer deaths worldwide, with most cases linked to hepatitis. Although effective tools exist to prevent and treat viral hepatitis, these interventions are still not reaching everyone who needs them.

Awareness remains a significant challenge. Research conducted by the World Hepatitis Alliance (WHA) found that nearly half of people globally are unaware of the link between hepatitis and liver cancer, highlighting the need for greater public awareness and stronger action to prevent avoidable deaths.

During Liver Cancer Awareness Month, WHA is calling for greater investment and action to scale up hepatitis elimination efforts and reduce the burden of liver cancer. Through its white paper, Beating Cancer Through Hepatitis Elimination – Working Together to Reduce NCDs, WHA sets out key calls to action for policymakers that could make a transformative difference for people at risk.

Nearly 300 million people are living with viral hepatitis worldwide, yet only around one third have been diagnosed. Despite having the tools to diagnose and treat hepatitis, access to testing remains out of reach for many. Urgent action is needed to close this gap and put elimination within reach by 2030.

The tools to eliminate hepatitis exist. But they are still not reaching everyone who needs them. That’s why community leadership, equitable access to innovation and people-centred health systems must be at the heart of the response.

The World Hepatitis Alliance is pleased to be joining health leaders, patient advocates, funders and civil society partners today at the Collective Impact House in Berlin to explore how we can turn innovation into impact.

From shaping AI-enabled health systems with patients to recognising patient leadership as essential health infrastructure and embedding civil society voices in global policy, these themes resonate strongly with our work to eliminate hepatitis.

We look forward to exchanging ideas, building new connections and advancing solutions that put people first and bridge gaps across disease areas. Together, we can turn the promise of hepatitis elimination into reality.

The World Hepatitis Alliance's fifth Community Impact Accelerator Programme brought together 17 advocates from 13 countries across Africa, Asia, Europe, North America and Oceania, equipping community and civil society leaders with practical skills to advance hepatitis elimination.

Delivered through an in-person workshop at the 2026 World Hepatitis Summit in Bangkok and interactive virtual sessions, the programme strengthened participants’ confidence, knowledge and ability to turn advocacy ideas into action.

With 85% saying they would definitely recommend the programme, Group Five is now better equipped and connected to contribute to the global effort to eliminate hepatitis by 2030.
