This Wednesday, we’re shining a light on World Hepatitis Alliance member, the Patient and Community Welfare Foundation of Malawi (PAWEM).

On 28 July, PAWEM led a Hepatitis B Awareness Walk in Chikwawa district, Malawi, as part of the STOP-HBV project, and in commemoration of World Hepatitis Day.

The walk sought to raise community awareness of Hepatitis B, and promote testing, vaccination, treatment and prevention of mother-to-child transmission.

The World Hepatitis Alliance is pleased to have co-authored a comparative analysis of liver cancer, and lung cancer with partner, the Center for Disease Analysis Foundation.

The findings show that there is a greater chance of a viral hepatitis infection leading to liver cancer than there is of current smoking leading to lung cancer.

For the first time ever, the World Hepatitis Alliance is calling for expressions of interest to host the World Hepatitis Summit 2028.

This is an incredible opportunity to showcase a country’s leadership in hepatitis elimination to a global audience. We are seeking proposals from collaborative partnerships between one or more local civil society organisations, the Ministry of Health, and the local tourist board, across all geographic regions.

The UN recently announced a new UN political declaration on HIV/AIDS, setting out Member States’ commitments to integrating hepatitis programmes into HIV services, including by:

• Promoting and delivering integrated prevention, treatment and care
• Scaling up triple elimination programmes
• Ensuring access to stigma- and discrimination-free services

The World Hepatitis Alliance has summarised the key items from the new political declaration and outlined how it can be used by advocates to hold their governments accountable; implementing its commitments and eliminating both diseases as public health threats.

Continuing our 2026 series, download our new community toolkit on prevention of mother-to-child transmission (PMTCT).

In 2022, WHA developed the white paper ‘Mothers and babies can’t wait: a call for action to end mother-to-child transmission of hepatitis B’, putting forward policy recommendations to ensure maternal and child health services are equitable, accessible and available to all who need them.

Our new toolkit provides practical suggestions on how community-based organisations can make the recommendations in the white paper relevant and advocate for them to be implemented, accelerating progress towards eliminating mother-to-child transmission of hepatitis B.

This week, NHS England announced that 100,000 people have accessed treatment for hepatitis C in the last decade, marking a significant moment in the country's fight against the virus.

Rachel Halford, World Hepatitis Alliance Past President and CEO of The Hepatitis C Trust in the UK, described England as being 'on the cusp of one of the most significant public health achievements in our country’s history'.

However, she reiterated the need for sustained support and renewed, long-term funding for it to be achieved.
