Small changes can remove big barriers.

This World Autism Acceptance Month, we’re focusing on how workplaces can better support autistic people to thrive.

Everyone experiences work differently. Adjustments should remove the barriers an individual faces, not follow a one-size-fits-all checklist.

Here are some workplace adjustments that can make a real difference:

• Flexible working
Fixed hours or locations can create barriers. Flexibility can help remove these.

• Clear structure and communication
Unclear tasks or changing expectations can create barriers. Clear instructions and consistency make a difference.

• Sensory environments
Noise, lighting or busy spaces can be overwhelming. Quieter spaces or small changes to lighting can help.

• Consistent workspaces
Hot desking can create barriers for some people. Having a consistent workspace can support comfort and focus.

These changes don’t just support autistic people, they help create better, more inclusive workplaces for everyone.

If you’re thinking about how your workplace could do more, we can help.

Heading into the weekend with a callout to all the amazing Games Aid members to remember to vote for your selected charities soon. Your support makes a massive difference to charities like ours.
Meet T-Jay. He is 13 and has Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. He loves gaming, swimming and going out with his friends. With the help of our funders AFK was able to fund this very special all-terrain powerchair. We were thrilled when his mum sent us this photo and massage.
"T-Jay is loving the chair! The amount of opportunities this has given T-Jay is endless! He loves to be able to get out and about with his dog Koda who he absolutely adores! He has been on a trip to a theatre in London to see the lion king with school which was an amazing experience for him. We can not thank you again for all your help, to most this is just a chair to use and TJ it’s his independence and means he can access the world like every one else".

🌸 Spring reminds us that growth takes time, and every journey is different.

Just like flowers bloom in their own way, every disabled or neurodivergent young person we support needs something unique. There is no one-size-fits-all.

That is why AFK takes a personalised approach. We get to know each young person, understand what matters to them, and provide the right support for their journey to independence.

Meet Ivy

Six-year-old Ivy from Brighton has spina bifida and recently had hip reconstruction surgery. After three months in a cast, she needed equipment to rebuild her strength. But just as importantly, she wanted to play with her friends again.

Our Mobility team did not just find a trike. They sourced the right trike for Ivy’s needs. One that supports her rehabilitation and gives her the freedom to:

• Ride around her cul-de-sac with friends
• Cycle to see the horses she loves 🐴
• Explore the beach near her home 🏖️

It even arrived in sparkle pink, her favourite colour 💖

For every £1 we spent on Ivy’s trike, we secured an extra 25p from other funders, helping her family get the full support they needed.

That is the AFK difference.

🌱 Help more young people bloom:

The trike has arrived.

Finn, 12, from Northern Ireland has received his adaptive trike from AFK, giving him the support and stability he needs to ride safely and confidently.

We love seeing moments like this.

We’re excited to share that AFK has launched our new Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) services.

Over the past few months, we’ve been developing training and consultancy to help organisations build more inclusive workplaces for disabled and neurodivergent people.

Our sessions are shaped by lived experience, helping organisations better understand the barriers people face and the practical steps they can take to remove them.

Every organisation is on a different journey when it comes to inclusion. That’s why our training and consultancy can be tailored to your team, your workplace and your goals.

Together, we can create workplaces where disabled and neurodivergent people have the opportunity to thrive.

We’d like to say a massive AFK thank you to Chiltern Railways for the incredible support they provide for the disabled and neurodiverse young people we work with. A group of fantastic employees from across the company gave up their time and welcomed us to Marylebone Station on Friday for an impactful careers insight day.

Young people took a guided tour of the station and back office and learned about the range of roles that exist in the rail industry and the skills required to enter the profession.

We all learned so much about how the station and the line operates and were treated to stepping on a brand new Mark 5A train. What a great day. We picked up lots of new knowledge and careers advice (plus goody bags and cupcakes)! This was all funded by a generous grant from the Chiltern Railways Community Investment Fund.

Our young people face many barriers to entering the workplace and opportunities like this make so much difference to their skills, confidence and networks. We’re incredibly grateful.
