Cranberry products and extracts have been studied since early 90’s on their beneficial effects on treatment of UTI and also in their prophylaxis. Their phenolic content increases the pH of urine that helps in their bacteriostatic property and also the nonenzymatic production of nitric oxide helps in their antimicrobial action as one of the earlier proposed mechanisms. A newer mechanism is the anti-adhesive mechanism of Proanthocyanidins (PAC) in the extract help in preventing the bacteria to attach to uroepithelial cells of the bladder.
