When I was researching for my dissertation, after paying £92,000 to study nutrition, I finally found a fibre study on a Black population, Ghanaians in Ghana vs Ghanaians in the UK.

At first glance, the UK group looked like they were eating more fibre, 8.3g per 1000 kcal vs 6.7g.

But then I asked myself the obvious question,
How is this possible when only 4% of people in the UK reach our 30g fibre guideline?

So, I looked deeper.

They weren’t eating better,
they were eating more of everything, more calories, more saturated fat, different eating patterns.

That tiny bump in fibre wasn’t meaningful at all.

And that’s when it hit me,
even when we do have studies on Black groups, they’re often too small, too limited, or too context-specific to guide national recommendations.

This is why representation matters,
because one small study can’t speak for millions of people.

Tomorrow I’ll break down what this study actually showed and why it matters.

Comment “PART 2” if you want the breakdown.

I truly thought something was wrong with my body.
I was bloated, scared of food, scared of eating “wrong,” scared that every meal would trigger another flare.

And the part that no one ever explained to me?

Your gut isn’t exactly reacting to the food…
it’s reacting to the change.

When your fibre intake jumps suddenly
(or when you reintroduce foods you’ve restricted),
your friendly gut bacteria simply cannot keep up.
They’re under-trained, under-fed, and are now overwhelmed.

So instead of feeling better when I “ate clean,”
my symptoms got worse. 😭

Not because the food was ‘bad’
but because my gut simply wasn’t ready for it.

Tomorrow I’m breaking down exactly what was happening inside my gut and why your friendly bacteria reacts
and why so many women experience this same pattern without ever being told. Leaving us to feel that our body is literally working against us. Trust me, you’re not alone here.

Comment PART 4 if you want the explanation on exactly why your gut does this and let me know what your current gut issue is 🙏🏽

OMG the bloating 😭
No one talks about the bloating that gets worse the “cleaner” you eat.
No one talks about giving up foods, cutting more, watching every bite…
Only to end up with more pain, more bloating, more discomfort, more food fear.
More isolation.
More wondering if your body is broken.

I’ve lived through that spiral, the safe foods, the flare-ups, the confusion.
And if you’re in it too, I promise you’re not alone.

There is a reason this keeps happening.
A real one.
And tomorrow I’m going to break down exactly what was happening inside my own gut when “clean eating” made everything worse.

Comment “PART 3” if you want the explanation.

Why does eating healthier sometimes make your gut feel worse?
No one ever talks about this.

For so many people (including me), “eating clean” led to more bloating, more discomfort, and even fear of food.
Not because the foods were “wrong,” but because my gut didn’t have the capacity for them yet.

Your microbiome doesn’t respond to trends, it responds to what it’s been trained to tolerate.

I’ll break this down more in my next post.

Can we just appreciate how wild it is that I got through six years of dietetics training…
and only learned these facts because I did my own research?🤯

I learned the hard way during my degree that the guidelines we rely on — the same ones I recite to patients — don’t clearly represent everyone.
And that gap matters.
It’s a disservice to the people we’re trying to help.

Advocacy matters.
Your questions matter.
Your voice in every appointment matters.

Black communities face the highest risks — yet the data barely includes us and this is what motivated me through my degree.

I spent £92,000 studying nutrition, only to learn that I wasn’t represented in most of what I was taught.
The deeper digging, the uncomfortable truths — came from doing my own research.

We already know who the largest demographic in the UK is.
That isn’t the issue.

The issue is this:
Our national datasets don’t reflect the whole population.
And even when ethnicity is collected, it’s rarely broken down — sometimes it isn’t reported at all.

So the research shaping our national nutrition guidelines — the same guidance meant to help reduce some of our top killers like cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, and colorectal cancer — isn’t fully representative of everyone it’s meant to protect.

This doesn’t make the advice “wrong.”
It just means it wasn’t built with all of us in mind.

That’s why advocacy matters.
Asking questions matters.
Bringing support to appointments matters.

We can’t change decades of missing data overnight,
but we can change how we show up.

Have you ever felt like a recommendation just wasn’t made for you let me know in the comments below.👇🏾

The NDNS shows that only 5.7 percent of people in the UK are reaching 30 grams of fibre a day. If that is our baseline, we don’t actually know what hitting 30 grams looks like across different communities, different symptoms, or different health needs.

Constipation runs deep in my Caribbean family. So when I followed the guideline and still didn’t see change, I pushed past it. That was the first time my own symptoms started to shift.

We already know what the research shows when populations consistently exceed their fibre recommendations. Lower risks of cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, and colorectal cancer. More diverse microbiomes. Better gut function. Longer, healthier lives.

The problem is not the benefits.
The problem is the data we base our advice on.

We need clearer information, better representation, and guidance that reflects all of us.
