ISHA - The Hip Preservation Society Our vision is to be the premier international society for education and research in hip preservation

ISHA – The Hip Preservation Society is an international organisation which is focused on hip preservation surgery to enhance patient care and outcomes, through the delivery of training, education, support of research, sharing of knowledge and best practice, fostering global collaboration and provision of patient and professional information to improve hip care. Our mission is to create “healthy hi

ps” by bringing hip preservation, prevention and treatment to all people regardless of age, social status, gender or economic situation. Our vision is a world with equitable access to quality treatment and the best achievable patient outcomes through improved access to appropriate treatment, early intervention, prevention and education, with the goal of us living in a world where hip joint replacement is only an occurrence of old age. ISHA’s purpose is to advance, enhance, and raise awareness of the field of hip preservation, to facilitate early intervention to improve patient outcomes.

We’d like to recognise several long-standing members whose dedication to ISHA and to advancing excellence in hip preservation has spanned many years...

Dr Joshua Harris obtained a B.S. degree in Chemistry from Wright State University in 2002 before attending the Ohio State University College of Medicine, graduating magna cm laude in 2006.

He completed an Orthopedic Surgery residency at the same institution. He joined Houston Methodist Hospital in 2013 after completing a fellowship in Orthopedic Sports Medicine at Rush University’s Sports Medicine Program.

He is Associate Professor at Houston Methodist, Texas A&M, and Weill Cornell Medical College. Dr Harris joined ISHA in 2013 and has been an active member of the Society ever since, currently serving on the Editorial Taskforce of the Education Committee.

Title of Study: The Ability of Plain Radiography to Accurately Describe the Bone Surface at the Head–Neck Junction of the Femur: A Study Using Human Bone Models

Authors: Mimura T, Furuya Y, Kumagai K, Amano Y, Miyahara S, Uemura R, Horikawa S, Saito H, Umeda K, Ushiyama F, Ogata Y, Yayama T, Mori K, Imai S.

Journal Reference: J Hip Preserv Surg. 2025;12:65-73. doi:10.1093/jhps/hnae048.

Key Takeaways⁣
• This bone model study evaluated how accurately plain radiographs can depict the head–neck junction (HNJ) in the anterosuperior femoral head–neck region relevant to cam morphology.

• Using 6 human bone models and 13 radiographic views, the authors assessed visualization of the HNJ at the 1:00, 1:30, and 2:00 radial planes.

• The most accurate view for the 1:00 plane was the 45° Dunn view, while the best view for the 1:30 plane was the 45° modified Dunn view.

• For the 2:00 plane, the most accurate radiograph was the 90° modified Dunn view.

• Interobserver and intraobserver reliability were excellent, supporting reproducibility of these radiographic assessments.

• The authors conclude that, in this bone model setting, 45° Dunn, 45° modified Dunn, and 90° modified Dunn views are the most suitable plain radiographs for evaluating the HNJ at the 1:00, 1:30, and 2:00 planes, respectively.

Title of Study: Accelerated Rehabilitation and Return to Sport After Hip Arthroscopy for Femoroacetabular Impingement Syndrome Is Safe and Effective

Authors: Kwiecien SY, Mueller MP, Grossi JJ, Tyler TF, McHugh MP, Galano GJ.

Journal Reference: J Hip Preserv Surg. 2025;12:33-39. doi:10.1093/jhps/hnae044.

Key Takeaways⁣
• This prospective study evaluated whether an accelerated rehabilitation protocol after hip arthroscopy for FAI syndrome could safely support an earlier return to sport (RTS).

• A total of 56 athletes were included, comprising 35 recreational and 21 competitive-level athletes.

• Overall, 44 patients (79%) returned to sport at a mean of 5.3 ± 3.5 months after surgery.

• High-demand competitive athletes returned to sport at a similar timeframe and all returned to their sport by 12 months.

• Patient-reported outcomes were favorable, and early RTS (≤5 months) was not associated with worse HAGOS or mHHS scores compared with later RTS.

• The authors conclude that accelerated rehabilitation after hip arthroscopy for FAI appears safe and effective, allowing most athletes to return to sport within 6 months.

📢 United 2026: Keeping Hips and Groins Match-Fit for the World Cup Footballer

🗓 Saturday, 6 June 2026.

⌚️ 09:00 – 10:30 AM Eastern Standard Time (EST) / 14:00 – 15:30 BST.

Hip and groin problems remain one of the most challenging injury patterns in elite and recreational soccer, regularly affecting player availability and performance throughout the season.

In the build‑up to the expanded 48‑team FIFA World Cup 2026 across Canada, Mexico and the USA, clinicians are under increasing pressure to keep players healthy through congested match schedules, international travel and high training loads.

In this joint ISAKOS–ISHA webinar, an international faculty of hip preservation surgeons, sports physicians and physiotherapists will deliver a practical, case‑driven update on the assessment, imaging and management of hip and groin injuries in soccer players.

Title of Study: Arthroscopic-Assisted Core Decompression for Avascular Necrosis of the Femoral Head Demonstrates Favorable Clinical Outcomes: A Systematic Review

Authors: Akhta M, Razick D, Amani N, Aamer S, Wen J, Shelton T, Wang D.

Journal Reference: J Hip Preserv Surg. 2025;12:186-194. doi:10.1093/jhps/hnaf018.

Key Takeaways⁣
• This systematic review evaluated clinical outcomes of arthroscopic-assisted core decompression (AACD) for avascular necrosis of the femoral head and compared it with isolated core decompression (CD) when possible.

• A total of 9 studies were included, comprising 358 patients (462 hips) treated with AACD.

• In comparative studies, the modified Harris Hip Score was significantly higher after AACD than after isolated CD in 4 of 5 studies.

• The collapse rate after AACD ranged from 2.9% to 14.0%, compared with 14.6% to 28.6% after isolated CD, with all comparative studies reporting significantly higher collapse rates in the isolated CD group.

• AACD also demonstrated a low complication rate and allowed treatment of associated intra-articular pathology in the same setting.

• The authors conclude that AACD provides favorable patient-reported outcomes and survivorship, with a possibility of superior outcomes compared with isolated CD.
