What does a guitar exam have to do with surgery?

It may be more than you think! 🎸👨‍⚕️

Last week, Mr Ben Lamb passed his grade 6 acoustic guitar exam. And it got him thinking about everything music and surgery have in common.

1️⃣ Both exist to make life better. Surgery restores health. Music brings comfort, joy and hope.

2️⃣ Both are deeply satisfying to practice…but only if you show up consistently, embrace deliberate practice and stay honest with yourself when things aren’t yet good enough. Ben says:

“Self-criticism isn’t optional - it’s the engine of improvement”

3️⃣ Neither journey is solo. Great surgeons and great musicians reply on supportive, constructive teachers, and on teams that move in sync - whether that’s a theatre team or a group of musicians playing together.

4️⃣ And finally, both need dexterity in your hands and clarity in your mind - holding the whole piece or operation in your head, while staying locked in on every tiny detail in front of you.

“Different tools,same mindset” as Ben explains. “Serve others, keep learning, and remember, there is always another level”
