I'm in the mood for sharing this story!
Earlier this year, when I visited our partner’s tailoring centre in the heart of Mumbai’s red-light district, there was one morning that has stayed with me so vividly.
I was on my way to the centre, standing at a busy crossing, waiting for a break in the traffic. The roads were heaving with cars, rickshaws, trucks and the constant blaring of horns and Bollywood music, the familiar soundtrack of Indian towns and cities 😊
Around me, women were already out for the day, dressed in their finest and waiting for customers. It was only 10am. Some were chatting, some were standing quietly, but all of them were simply doing what life had taught them was their path.
And in the middle of that chaos, I felt oddly at peace, a quiet knowing that I was exactly where I was meant to be.
But with that peace came a heaviness. A realisation that so many of these women had never been offered another choice. For some, this was the only way they knew to survive, not because they lacked strength or talent, but because no one had ever opened a different door for them.
That’s why the little sewing room tucked inside the same neighbourhood means so much.
Inside that room, young women are learning tailoring; a skill that can open entirely new possibilities. A skill that can help them step into safe work, earn an income, and begin to imagine a future that doesn’t have to mirror the one around them.
Every bag created in that Tailoring Training Centre carries a story of potential. A story of someone gaining confidence, stitch by stitch. A story of choice, something many people don’t realise can be life-changing.
This work won’t transform everything overnight. But every young woman who walks into that room is taking a step towards breaking a cycle that has shaped generations.
And every time someone supports the products we make together, they’re helping keep that door to a new future open.
And if you’ve read this far, consider yourself fortunate ❤️ not because life is perfect, but because you weren’t dealt the same cards these women were. Your awareness, your empathy, and your support help make new choices possible for someone else.
