🌟 Penge PCN Wellbeing Hub – NHS App Session 🌟

What an incredible session at our latest Wellbeing Hub focused on the NHS App!

We saw a record turnout with amazing engagement from our patients, all eager to learn how to download and navigate the app. It was truly heartwarming to support individuals in accessing their health records and taking greater control of their health journey.

A big thank you to everyone who attended and made the session such a success. The enthusiasm and positivity were truly inspiring and remind us why community work like this matters so much. 💙

Diabetic eye screening is an important part of diabetes care and helps protect your sight. Diabetes can damage the small blood vessels in the eyes, leading to a condition called diabetic retinopathy, which can cause vision loss if not detected early. Screening checks for early signs before you notice any changes, meaning treatment can start sooner and help prevent serious damage.

If you have diabetes and are aged 12 or over, you will usually be invited for screening every 1–2 years. The test is quick and involves taking photographs of the back of your eyes to check for any changes.

Attending your screening appointment can:
• Detect problems early before symptoms develop 👁️✨
• Help prevent or reduce sight loss 💙🩺
• Support long-term eye health as part of your diabetes care 🌿📊

Even if your vision feels fine, it’s important to attend when invited. 💙✨

Myth or Fact: “If I feel well, I don’t need screening.” 🤔

❌ Myth

It’s one of the most common misconceptions—and it can stop people from getting the care they need.

✔ Fact:
Screening is specifically for people who feel well. It’s designed to detect potential health issues early, often before any symptoms appear.

Why does this matter?
✔ Conditions like cancer and heart disease can develop silently
✔ Early detection can make treatment more effective
✔ Screening can offer reassurance and peace of mind

Who is it for?
Depending on your age and risk factors, you may be invited for:

Cervical screening
Breast screening
Bowel cancer screening
NHS Health Checks

A quick reassurance:
Most screening results come back normal. But if something is found, it’s often at an early stage—when support and treatment can make the biggest difference.

What should you do?
📩 Received an invite? Don’t ignore it—book your appointment
📞 Unsure what you’re eligible for? Contact your GP practice

April is Bowel Cancer Awareness Month 💙

It’s a great reminder to look after your health and encourage those around you to do the same. Bowel cancer is one of the most common cancers, but when it’s found early, it’s highly treatable - and more than 9 in 10 people survive when diagnosed at the earliest stage.

Many people put off seeking help because symptoms can seem mild or a bit embarrassing to talk about - but getting checked early really can make all the difference.

If you notice any ongoing changes, such as:
• Changes in bowel habits
• Blood in your stool
• Unexplained weight loss
• Persistent tummy discomfort

Please don’t ignore it - reach out to your GP.

In South East London, bowel cancer screening is offered to people aged 50–74. If you’re eligible, you’ll automatically be sent a simple home test kit (FIT) every 2 years - please do take part when invited.
