Too many thoughts?
Busy mind?
Can't meditate, or does it feel like it's not for you?
The mind generates thoughts as the body breathes. Therefore, the mind is not the enemy and thoughts are not a problem.
By first becoming aware of your thoughts and their quality, you can stop identifying with them, reminding yourself that they are just thoughts, not facts. Thus, the narratives and beliefs that are not helpful start to lose strength and the power they have on you and on your actions.
It's important to check your expectations when you stop for a minute. Imagine all the videos, images, thoughts, ideas, fears, interactions, appointments, memories, and lessons that your brain receives in just one day. It's pretty normal then to expect that the mind will be busy processing everything, categorising, deleting, allocating, registering, integrating, and so on.
So by allowing yourself to stop for a few minutes and simply observe your mind and its thoughts, you are actually gifting yourself a moment when your system is not receiving more inputs or at least they are severely reduced, and then your mind/body has space to assimilate the information.
Now imagine what it is like if you don't give yourself this pause. The chaos is installed.
So next time you STOP, remember that it is okay and even expected to have a busy mind, and that providing this space is already healing. Observe what your mind is doing, without engaging any particular thought or trying to find a solution. Simply allow yourself to be.
No judging
No expectation
No agenda
Lastly, having a jumping mind in the beginning doesn't mean that it will continue this way forever. You might be surprised by how it settles and how much space is create if you go through for just a few minutes.
So don't give up, don't try to achieve or expect a blank/zen mind, and don't let the start of the practice scare you away.
Instead, be patient, stay with it for a bit, show yourself compassion, and bring openness to whatever is there. No fixing, no changing, just being and observing.
Your body, mind, spirit, and mental health will be grateful.
