I call it menoSTART, not menoPAUSE 🤍

That idea came from my mother.

For so long, menopause has been spoken about in whispers - like it’s the beginning of the end, a “pause”, a slowing down, a decline.

But what if it’s actually a beginning?

During this time our bodies are not shutting down, they’re adapting, recalibrating and evolving.

We deserve language that reflects that strength.

✨ Many women report increased confidence, emotional resilience, and reduced anxiety after menopause.

✨ Without the hormonal fluctuations of menstrual cycles, energy and mood can become more stable for some women.

✨ Research shows that regular strength training during and after menopause significantly improves metabolism, bone density, and overall quality of life.

Menopause isn’t the end of womanhood.

It’s the start of a new phase of it.

So no - I won’t call it a pause.

I call it a menoSTART. đź’«

How’s your menoSTART?

Revising?
Overwhelmed?

This is somatic gold.

I do this with my patients. I do this with my children. I do this on my own. It’s gold. Thanks

Are stuck in open loops? Frozen by fear. As a consultant psychiatrist- this has been my game changer.. I came up with it today on the tube... Try this and tell me what you think

Walked past this on my way to clinic. A gentle reminder to keep going.

Sunday Check Up with Dr Gia

Whilst recently going on a night time walk with no torches or lights the guide told me to take “short, sturdy steps”.

It was a few words of advice to get me through the walk, but it has really stuck with me. It’s applicable to everything.

In life full with competing demands and so little time, we can quickly feel so overwhelmed.

Take short, sturdy steps.

It’s applicable to everything.

Whether it’s trying to complete a task for those with ADHD, revising for an upcoming exam, grief, struggling with depression or anxiety - all we can see is the mountain in front of us.

Take short, sturdy steps.

Start and keep moving, take seemingly miniscule steps with meaning and intention. Each step feels like it’s getting us no where, but put together, we’re climbing that mountain.

Six (hidden) signs of ADHD in the modern age

• You open your phone to do one thing
and ten minutes later you are asking your child partner or friend
“what was I doing again?”

Smartphones are the queens of distraction. Your attention is pulled towards the message, problem or stimulus directly in front of you and the original intention quietly disappears. Not lack of interest. Attentional capture.

• You see a random post
and suddenly you are spending hours googling, fact checking and connecting dots.

Open loops are hard to tolerate, so your brain tries to close the story. One link leads to another and before you know it you are down a rabbit hole and oddly well informed about the mating schedule of humpback whales.

• Doom scrolling but on another level

Platforms like Instagram are built on variable reward schedules. Unpredictable rewards keep everyone hooked. For neurodivergent brains it can be WILD.

• Full access to Spotify BUT you drill the SAME SONG you love over and over and over again.

you will not spend twenty pence on a carrier bag yet you are funding a small ecosystem of unused subscriptions that would absolutely stop if cancelling did not involve logging in, remembering a password or visiting a website.

• Somehow brilliant at last minute plans

You find out about something far too late and still pull off something impressive. From nothing to fully organised. Messaging everyone. Making it happen. When there is urgency, novelty and pressure your brain switches on.

• Running to the deadline

Running to appointments. Running for the tube. Stairs instead of lifts. Accidental HIIT. Cardio achieved (even if not intentionally!)

How many can you relate to? Whats missing?

As a Consultant Psychiatrist I am conscious that ADHD in modern life does not always look like what we were taught. So many of these traits are shaped by the environments we now live in... the DIVA (yes it’s called the DIVA -DIVA stands for the Diagnostic Interview for ADHD)- needs an update.
