We often feel stressed because we’re trying to rush through our current tasks to get to the "next thing."

Intentionally bringing active attention to the present chore can help. It transforms it from an annoying obstacle into a conscious choice, even if it’s something we don’t want to have to do. This might apply to routine work, a boring meeting or a household chore, for example.

Give it a go and see what you notice!

This is based on the idea that resistance to a chore creates more suffering than the chore itself. When you stop treating an activity as an obstacle standing between you and the “next thing” and instead bring your full, intentional presence to the act, the feeling of dread/boredom can dissolve.

Bringing full, deliberate presence to an activity engages the brain's executive functioning, effectively turning off the default mode network (DMN): the brain region responsible for mind-wandering, boredom, and complaining.

Pause and have a think – what does this quote say to you?

Self-acceptance and non-judgement are important aspects of mindfulness as well as seeing the good and the joy in things. This includes thoughts and emotions towards ourselves.

The practice of R.A.I.N., for example, invites us to Recognise our thoughts and emotions, to Allow them to be as they are, to Investigate them and to Nurture ourselves.

The awareness of thoughts, emotions and body that is cultivated through the practice of mindfulness can help with ‘letting go’ and ‘letting be’. This is not the same as giving up or giving in.

Together with meditation, grounding practices and mindful movement, Jon Kabat-Zinn’s 9 attitudes of mindfulness are covered as part of my 6-week mindfulness course.

Mindfulness is about drawing our attention to the present moment.

Letting go of what was: moving past old regrets and pain so the past does not control your present.
Enjoying what is: practising presence and appreciating the current moment instead of rushing through life, often on autopilot.
Trusting what will be: releasing fear and anxiety about the unknown future, about the things that we can’t control, with trust and acceptance.

Come and learn more at my next 6-week course!

Morning course starts Tuesday 22nd September 10-11am in my Mindfulness Studio, BR6
(This course has a 2-week half-term break)

Mindfulness practice enables us to sit with our emotions in a supportive way.

We learn to let emotions pass through us rather than fighting/suppressing them. We allow room for uncomfortable emotions, noticing the body sensations and thoughts that accompany this and, with time, enlarging our 'tolerance window' and building resilience.

The practice of mindfulness tools and attitudes in our everyday lives can help us to cope with the difficult things.

We all see life through our own lens. This is why different people have different views and experiences of the very same event. There’s nothing wrong with that as such, but mindfulness helps us to develop an awareness of things as they actually are in the present moment. This can help with relationships and gives us a chance to respond rather than react.

If you'd like to learn more, I run small-group and one-to-one mindfulness sessions online and in-person: see link in bio and follow me on Facebook or Instagram!
