Working with plants and people...

Four years ago today I was told that I'd passed my final clinical exams, what a four years it has been working as a Medical Herbalist. Every day is different, always making medicine and remedies for lovely people.

I was awarded the Dorothy Carroll award for the top final clinical exam, which felt like a miracle after having Shingles in the run up to my exams. Anyone who has studied herbal medicine to degree level will tell you it's a tough journey, full time over 4 or 5 years and we'll over 4000 hours of study. Over 500 hours sitting in front of patients too. Most people don't realise you study orthodox medicine as well as botany, ecology and all the plant science and energetics.

I've loved working with so many patients over the last few years, seeing the benefits that herbal medicine can bring and It's always a privilege to work with someone on their health journey.

In the background I've quietly been studying Tibetan herbal medicine to add to my western herbal knowledge and this year started a three year apprenticeship with Lucy Jones - Myrobalan Clinic It's been an amazing year diving into this ancient knowledge, much of which is passed down orally over many many years.

Join me on Wednesday 28th October for a fun Halloween themed taster session of Junior Herbalist Club. at Prestbury Village Hall from 10am-12noon.

Junior Herbalist Club (JHC) is an award-winning extracurricular course for children and teens, bringing the magic of herbal medicine to life through fun, hands-on learning.

This nourishing nature-based session will include making herbal 'remedies' to take home. Children will be encouraged to use magnifying glasses to look at the plants, learning about plant ID and we'll create a plant ID discovery table (heading outside will be weather dependent, if the weather is terrible the herbs will be provided).

We'll make bath bombs to take home which would make lovely gifts for Christmas, as well as create a tasty Lavender lemonade to enjoy, children will also create leaf rubbings and make a Cinnamon lip scrub to take home.

Children under 8 will need a parent/guardian to stay with them for the duration of the class, please note the class is suitable for 6 years and above. Herbal tea will also be provided for grown ups. Please note children will need to wear clothes/shoes that can get messy.

Junior Herbalist Club was originally established in 2014 and is the only nationally recognised herbal medicine course for children. It is delivered by Medical Herbalists who have undergone specific training in order to deliver the course. Due to the popularity Level Two and Three can also be enjoyed once Level One/Two has been completed.

A bit about me - I'm an award winning Medical Herbalist, based in Macclesfield and run a private online health clinic. I'm an Advanced Junior Herbalist Club Leader, have enhanced DBS and first aid training. I regularly run workshops for adults - see the link in my bio or pinned post!

The next intake for the full Junior Herbalist Club course will be a Level One Easter School 2027, there will be also be a monthly Level One group on Sunday mornings starting in September 2026.

Hi, I'm Cath, a Medical Herbalist based in Cheshire, supporting patients all over the UK and passionate about plants and nature.

I run an online herbal medicine clinic (I do see patients face to face but it's mainly online these days) and help you with energy, digestion, skin conditions, brain fog, migraines, poor sleep, high blood pressure, hormonal issues.... every patient is different and has a unique health history.

I'm always working with you holistically, treating you as a whole person and aiming to get to the root cause of what's going on.

Sometimes we don't even work with herbs but start with nourishment, sleep, circadian rhythm, connection, joy and then move onto herbs.

Every tincture, capsule and tea is bespoke to you and to suit your circumstances and budget.

Herbal consultations are 90 minutes and you'll complete a registration form before your appointment.

We'll go through what you'd like support with in detail, when it started, what makes it worse/better and I’ll also ask you about the other systems of your body. As a herbalist I believe that we are interconnected so I treat the ‘whole’ person and underlying root cause.

I may also look at your tongue and will also ask for an up to date blood pressure reading as these tools provide me with valuable detail about your health and constitution.

We'll go through what a day looks like for you in detail - from sleep and waking to your energy during the day, what you eat/drink, your work and downtime and any exercise you do.

I'll be able to provide you with an overview action plan there and then, but I may also take some extra time to assess all the information you’ve shared. I'll create a treatment plan which I’ll email over to you.

Your 45 minute follow up consultation would be approximately four weeks later where we check in on how you’re responding to treatment.

Herbal medicine works gently and everyone has an individual response to treatment.

A day of distilling 🌿

Such a good Thursday, learning how to use an alembic, choosing herbs to distill and making a beautiful hydrosol.

A alembic is now at the top of my Christmas list!

Thank you Kate for your tuition and hospitality, it was good to spend time with other herbalists and talk plants all day.

So good to learn new skills, my plan is to incorporate more hydrosols when making creams for patients.
