"School holidays make my child's bedwetting worse - why?"

While some children's bladder symptoms improve during school holidays, some don't. This could be due to a lack of regular access to 'good' hydration (our old friend water!), compared to when the child is at school.

Lie-ins during holidays could also mean children are drinking too much fluid in the latter part of the day, rather than spacing it out throughout the whole day. This can then lead to nighttime accidents.

At P*ePS, we offer support and advice to children aged 5-17 years of age, motivating them to become 'the boss of their bladder'. Get in touch to book a free call.

Toilets in schools – should children have free access?

"Will using a mattress protector encourage a child to wet the bed?"

NO, definitely not!

They can be a hugely useful aid to help bedwetting become a bit more manageable overnight, because it will mean less washing and less stress.

I always advise parents that it's absolutely fine to use a mattress protector if your child struggles with bedwetting.

"Why does my bladder leak in the day?"

Think about how much you're drinking during the day - drinking a good amount of fluid relaxes the bladder symptoms, helps with capacity and helps you to hold onto the urine a little bit longer. RESTRICTING fluid is actually causing your bladder more harm!

Also, make sure that the fluids you are drinking aren't bladder irritants - that's fizzy drinks, citrus-based drinks and caffeine. Avoid!

Finally, visit the toilet regularly throughout the day - every 2-3 hours to empty your bladder. And before bedtime, encourage your child to 'double void' - go to the toilet, brush teeth and then go to the toilet for a second time.

How school holidays can improve your child's bedwetting!

During the holidays, children's bladder symptoms can sometimes improve - why?

- Access to fluid more regularly (bladder better hydrated)
- Free access to go to the toilet (unlike in some schools)
- Holidays can mean later nights, which means less time in bed and therefore less likely to wet the bed overnight

What is 'wee withholding'?

Some children withhold their urine because they don't like attending the toilet, or are distracted by playing with friends and really don't want to interrupt that. If this is your child, try a time voiding routine (going to the toilet every 2-3 hours) and set out a regulated toilet routine for them.

"What are the psychological reasons for daytime wetting?"

A common cause is anxiety, which can be due to toilet avoidance. Some children find it very difficult to attend public toilets (and also sometimes school toilets), due to embarrassment.

Other common reasons are family changes and also peer pressure when at school.

If your child is daytime wetting and it's a new symptom - you're best to get them checked out.

What is 'time voiding'?

Children are in school for a significant period of the day, five days a week. So a toileting routine is vital while they are there.

Time voiding means ensuring that they attend the toilet every two-three hours. Consider getting them a vibrating watch, will alert children when to attend the toilet, without disrupting classmates or interrupting the teacher.

It's important to have regular fluid intake and having access to their water at all times, so it is spaced throughout the school day. We highly recommend talking to their teacher about this ASAP.

Bedwetting & sleepovers - a very anxious time!

Make sure you have an open conversation with the parent hosting the sleepover, because you don't want your child to feel embarrassed about it or to have to miss out on attending these social situations.

How do you handle sleepovers if your child has night-time wetting?

Is your child dehydrated at school?

Children don't (or can't!) drink enough water at school!

This means that once they get home from school, they take in a lot of water, which means the body keeps hold of it and it takes time to work its way through their system. This means that they are much more likely to have wet nights.

Does your child stay hydrated during school time?
