🚨 Are we really training our teams for emergencies?

We talk about mandatory training:

🛟 Man overboard
🔥 Fire drills
🦺 Survival suits
🩹 First aid

But what happens when the emergency isn't the one you've practised?

🔥 A serious burn in the galley.
⚙️ A crush injury in the engine room.
🚪 A fall in the lazarette.
🩸 A casualty who can't be moved.

Does everyone know what to do?

🚨 Who raises the alarm?
🩺 Who gets the medical equipment?
🤝 Who supports the casualty?
📡 Who communicates with the bridge?
📞 Who calls for help?

🌍 Could everyone give accurate coordinates to the Coastguard?

⏳ Could the team keep a casualty safe for an extended period while waiting for help?

And perhaps the biggest question:

👥 Is your crew trained to work together — or simply trained individually?

A truly prepared team doesn't need every action directed by the Captain.

They understand their roles.
They communicate.
They support each other.
They respond almost like clockwork ⚙️

Because emergencies don't always happen during a drill.

🚨 When was the last time your whole team trained for the unexpected?

Lagan's Healthcare Limited peripathetic delivery can support teams to grow and gain confidence together. Get in touch to discuss your teams needs.

When do we think accidents are most likely to happen onboard?

Is it at the start of the season?
When everyone is finding their feet, learning the boat, getting used to new systems and working with a new team?

Or is it later in the season — when the hours have built up, the days are long, the pressure is constant and everyone is simply running on empty?

What about the moments when guests have high expectations, the itinerary changes, the turnaround is tight and the crew are expected to deliver the same level of service regardless of what is happening behind the scenes?

We often talk about tiredness as though it is a symptom of the job.
I think we should be asking whether it is actually a culture issue.

Are we creating environments where crew feel able to say:
"I'm struggling."
"I need a break."
"I'm not confident doing this."
"Can someone help me?"

Even on a small crew, there are ways to support each other.
It doesn't always require more people or more resources. Sometimes it means noticing when someone is not themselves. Sharing the workload. Checking in. Creating space to speak up. Looking after the person beside you before something goes wrong.
Because accidents rarely happen in isolation.

They can happen after a series of small pressures, compromises, distractions and missed opportunities to intervene.

So perhaps the question this season shouldn't simply be:
"How do we respond when something goes wrong?"

Perhaps we should be asking:
"When are we most likely to have an accident — and what can we do before we get there?"

I'd be really interested to hear from captains and crew:
When do you think the highest-risk periods of the yacht season actually are?

This week has been a stark reminder that even in a well-managed marine environment, accidents can happen and children are not immune to serious injury.

An Optimist sailor suffered a serious injury whilst competing last week, highlighting just how quickly an incident on the water can become a medical emergency.

It’s a reminder of why first aid provision in sailing and marine environments matters so much.

When you’re on the water, help may not be immediately accessible. Having trained people nearby who can recognise a serious injury, provide appropriate first aid and make the right decisions under pressure can make a huge difference.

Lagan’s Healthcare is pleased to provide first aid support to sailing and maritime environments, helping clubs, events and organisations create safer environments for participants, volunteers and crews.

Because whether you’re 4 or 94, on a small dinghy or a superyacht, good first aid matters.

🚨 Paediatric Tracheostomy Care – Theory & Simulation Training 🚨

This week our Clinical Skills Training Team worked with specialist carers to build skills alongside our core values:
People. Quality. Trust. 💛

Care is about more than tasks, it’s about confidence, competence, and compassion. That’s why we create safe simulation environments where carers can practice, ask questions, and prepare for real-life situations.

We ran adverse scenarios and emergency situations, allowing carers to make decisions in the best interests of the young people they support. Every journey is individual, and we act with kindness and understanding every step of the way.

Too often, complex care can be treated as just a task. We focus on the situation, the person, and the judgement needed, that’s where we add the most value.

If competency sign-off is a barrier for your team, we can help with personalised solutions that ensure staff are safe, confident, and ready.
