Greater Manchester and East Cheshire AAA Screening Programme

Greater Manchester and East Cheshire AAA Screening Programme The Greater Manchester & East Cheshire Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm (AAA) Screening Programme's aim is to reduce the number of ruptured AAA deaths.

Men aged 65+ are invited for a quick pain-free scan on the tummy. Results are given straight away. An abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) is a swelling of the aorta, the main artery from your heart which passes through your abdomen. It can be serious if not spotted early as it grows bigger and can eventually burst. NHS AAA Screening is routinely offered to men and those born male aged 65 and over as they are more likely to have a AAA. AAAs do not cause any signs or symptoms until they rupture which is a medical emergency. Around 5,000 men aged 65 and over in England and Wales die from a ruptured AAA every year.
