The season of Kapha.

Kapha season extends from cold winter days, when the ground freezes solid, to the mud of early spring, when the sap rises and the first shoots begin to break through the ground. These conditions disturb kapha dosha’s heavy, dense, wet, gooey, stable, cool qualities.

To pacify kapha during the early part of this season:

1. Turn to foods that are lighter, drier, pungent and warming. As soon as they’re available eat the first spring greens of the season which naturally support this time of cleansing. Stick to three meals a day to avoid overindulging.

2. Do things that get you up and out of the house. Get up before kapha time (6 a.m. to 10 a.m.) and get in some early exercise—bike riding, walking, or other light aerobic activity, ideally before 10 a.m.

3. Daily use of your tongue scraper, neti pot, and nasya oil will help with seasonal allergies and keep kapha from building.

As always, have fun experimenting with what your unique body needs at this time of year and most importantly let your intuition lead the way- your amazing body knows what it needs to do to balance itself.

Chewing...

One of the most challenging life-style tweaks I’ve made has been chewing my food.

It sounds silly but for decades I had no awareness of how little I would chew my food before swallowing and the impact that this was having on my digestion. As a teacher I would feel pride at the speed in which I could devour my lunch to get back into the classroom and continue my marking or setting up for the afternoon.

Ayurveda stresses the importance of the relationship between digestion and good health. The first stage of digestion is in your mouth and it begins with chewing your food. Chewing grinds up chunks of food by exposing it to the digestive juices in your saliva which ultimately aids better digestion.

Insufficient chewing forces your stomach to break down foods using acids which takes time and effort. This can result in low energy after eating, sluggish digestion, acid reflux, indigestion and bloating.

Chewing your food well can improve your energy levels and will promote good digestion.

One of the tricks I’ve found to remind me to chew my food well is to put my knife and fork down between each mouthful, not only does this slow me down but it also reminds me to chew!

Give it a go and see if you can feel the benefits…. xx

Dinahcharya (daily routines)

Here are 5 things that I try to do each morning that help me to set up my day well.

1- Wake-up early. It's good to wake up before the sun rises or with the sun.
2- Meditate or set an intention for the day. I do this before I get out of bed. It helps me to be more open to what life may bring me, helping me be more positive and focussed.
3. Tongue scraping. This stimulates the internal organs, helps digestion and removes ama (toxins/dead bacteria)
4. Drink a cup of warm lemon water. This is a great way to aid digestion and cleanse.
5. Gentle exercise. I try to exercise most mornings this may be a gentle run or yoga.

Life is busy and with all of the demands placed on us adding more to your life can feel overwhelming, but even if you can add one of these to your morning I'm sure you will feel the benefits in your mind and body. Have fun experimenting with what works for you xx

Is it time for a cleanse?

I’m sure at this time of year we can all identify with the feeling of wanting to have a deep clean of some-kind. Whether this is physically or mentally, this is a great time to consider giving your mind and body a break and an opportunity to reset and rejuvenate.

In Ayurveda it is believed that the best times to do a cleanse are at the change of a season. However, last week I did find myself drawn to doing a cleanse and I achieved this through eating a mono-diet of Kitchari for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

A Kitchari cleanse is a gentle yet highly effective way to detox the body. It aids digestion, improves sleep, improves metabolism, clears the skin, gives energy and mental clarity.

Kitchari is basic to the Ayurvedic way of life. Composed primarily of basmati rice and mung dal, it is a one pot dish which can produce balancing effects for the three bodily doshas promoting physical and mental well-being..

Basic recipe in the comments.

If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to drop me a message, I’d love to hear from you….xx

It’s the season of sniffles and snuffles and over the past few weeks everyone in my family has been struggling with a cold. A beautiful and simple to make at home remedy is ‘Ginger, Lime and Honey’. Not only is it a delicious and comforting drink but it also stokes the digestive fire, helps to remove toxins from the body as well as soothing a cough, cold and sore throat.
It’s incredibly easy to make, see the recipe below:

100g fresh ginger
6 limes
6 teaspoons honey (local is best!)
3 teaspoons brown sugar
200ml water

Cut, peel and blend the ginger in a blender with ½ cup of water.
Squeeze out the ginger juice from the pulp using a fine mesh strainer.
Mix the ginger juice with the juice of the limes, the honey and the brown sugar.

Mix 2-3 tablespoons of the mixture with hot water as a small drink. This can be kept in the fridge for up to 2 weeks.

I had a beautiful dog walk this morning, although it was grey and drizzly I was drawn to the beauty of the spider webs that surrounded me. I have to say, Autumn is my favourite time of the year. To me it’s the perfect time to hunker down, cosy up and begin to turn inward. I love all of the colours that we see as the leaves start to change. Like the trees, we can use this as a time to shed all that is not helpful and do our best to let go as we transition into a new season.

In Autumn, Vata- the dosha governed by the elements of air and ether becomes more dominant bringing cool, dry and windy qualities. To ensure that Vata does not become out of balance during this time it is important for us to work to incorporate balancing routines by simply introducing the opposite qualities of cool and dry into our lives.

Here are 3 simple tips to help you stay in balance this Vata season:

1. Eat warm, wet, heavy and grounding foods- This is the perfect time for seasonal soups and stews. Adding ghee to your diet helps add lubrication as well as supporting the immune system. Try to eat less dry, cold and raw foods. In the Autumn we want to emphasise the sweet, sour and salty tastes in our cooking to balance Vata.

2. Do a Netti pot as part of your morning routine. I must admit this isn’t the easiest thing to do but once you’ve mastered it you’ll never look back! This is a great way to make sure your nasal passages stay lubricated and clear.

3. Oil body massage. Daily oil massage helps to balance the cold, dryness of the season. Oil massage will deeply nourish the skin, it will calm the nervous system and improve circulation which can all become easily unbalanced during Vata season. I use sesame oil which is a beautiful, grounding heavy oil- perfect for this time of year.

Triphala is my best friend…

Triphala is amazing, it is made from Hartitaki, Vibhithaki and Amla. To name just a few of its healing properties it is a rejuvenator, helps with digestion, boosts immunity, helps with insomnia and balances all three doshas.
I take triphala daily and feel all of the benefits above. Triphala also helps heal eye disorders. Over the past few days I have struggled with a painful stye on my eye. Last night I used a simple triphala decoction to help it heal and I'm already seeing great progress!

Triphala Eye Wash:
1 cup of water
1 teaspoon triphala
Gently boil for 5 minutes
Strain the liquid using a cheese cloth to ensure there are no particles
Let the decoction cool and use as an eye wash.
