We are very grateful that Dr Alexandra Chen, a Trauma expert and psychologist, will be joining us on May 21st at 5.00pm BST time to talk on the topic of TRAUMA AND TOUCH THERAPY.
Dr. Alexandra Chen (A.B., A.M., Ed.M., PhD., Harvard University) is a trauma psychologist from Hong Kong serving refugees in armed conflict and displacement. For over 15 years, Alexandra has been working with war-affected children and their families in the Middle East and Africa, advising the UN, World Bank, government ministries and non-profit agencies on mental health and early childhood interventions, and to provide psychotherapy for victims of sexual violence and torture in and from Lebanon, Syria, Palestine, Iraq, Jordan, Turkey, Yemen, Somalia, Ethiopia, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Myanmar, among others.
Alexandra has spoken at the World Economic Forum in Davos since 2011 on behalf of refugee children, and has been interviewed by NYTimes, NPR, Aljazeera, and other international news outlets on her work. She has also published in The Lancet, Child Development, and other academic journals on the neuropsychological impact of trauma and toxic stress on refugee children’s cognitive functioning and parenting in displacement, the former featured in the award-winning documentary film, Terror and Hope: The Science of Resilience. Alexandra is also the founder of Early Light Lab, a science-driven research and policy lab advancing the protection and future of children in armed conflict. She additionally serves on the Board of Directors and Trustees for multiple non-profits globally. Alexandra speaks 10 languages, including Chinese, Arabic and French.
