Today we’re walking Leg 3 of the English Camino, but why is it called the Camino?
Camino is the Spanish word for “way” or “path”. So Camino de Santiago means “The Way of St James”, the network of ancient pilgrimage routes leading to Santiago de Compostela in northern Spain.
St James the Greater was one of the 12 apostles of Jesus and became the patron saint of pilgrims.
The scallop shell 🐚, the symbol of St James and, now, of the Camino itself. The lines of the shell are said to represent the many different paths that all lead to Santiago.
And talking of Caminos…
🇵🇹 In October 2027, Circle of Steps is heading to Portugal!
We’ll be walking the Portuguese Coastal Camino, tackling the route in stages over 3 years. The first trip will be five days of walking from Porto, along the beautiful Portuguese coast.
There’s already a lovely group of women interested, and we have a WhatsApp group for anyone who’d like to find out more, no commitment, just a place to share plans and information as we get closer.
