So, many of you know I’m somewhat of a perennial student - always got my nose stuck in some text book or article. I’m really looking forward to this training and applying it to practice with my current clients and those I’m yet to meet. Looking forward to working with Lynda as well, and the wealth of her experience to draw on! Woo and indeed hoo 😁

Swimming tips for absolute beginners:
Where do you start? For complete non-swimmers a good way to get going is to find a pool that feels comfortable for you. You could ask at your local pool if there are public sessions that are less busy if you feel shy or do not like busy environments.

If you are happy to get in the water you can start with walking forwards, backwards and sideways on your across the pool. This is a great way to warm up for your session, and also acquaint yourself with the size, depth and shape of the pool area. Getting more comfortable with the environment, will also mean there are no surprises whe it comes to knowing which areas of the pool are within your standing depth.

It is essential to stay within your standing depth until you become a more confident swimmer.

It was a super class with a lovely bunch of ladies and even a chap ventured out to join us this week!

I do find that once I have taken a class and am feeling super chilled, I start wending my merry way home, and then I have to stop on the roadside and marvel at the lovely place in which we live.

I’m looking forward to heading back to Winsley next Thursday.

So why do we recommend water-based exercise for those with chronic musculo-skeletal disorders (including but not limited to osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, back pain, tendonitis, bursitis, and fractures)?

It has been shown to improve physical function, quality of life and reduce pain for those with these conditions.

But don't just take my word for it, in this meta-analysis conducted with data from 32 different trials, and observing over 2200 participants Aquatic Exercise (AE) was compared with no exercise (NE) and light exercise (LE):

"This is the first systematic review and meta-analysis to study whether AE could improve chronic musculoskeletal disorders. The evidence suggests that AE benefits pain, physical function, and quality of life in adults with chronic musculoskeletal conditions compared to NE. Furthermore, when compared to LE, AE continues to provide a better improvement in patient pain."

So my May sessions at Church Farm Pool, Winsley kicked off with some lovely ladies on May 1st, and I'm looking forward to meeting the others that are joining the group this Thursday, May 8th.

This Aqua-Ease session is designed for those who are physically limited in some way; perhaps by arthritis, back pain, low range of movement, and others. I run a 40 minute small group class which begins with gently modified Aquafit movements, designed to assist with balance and mobility. This progresses to using the resistance of the water to push against; working on muscular strength and stability, finishing with a calming cool down of meditative, flowing movements which are integrated with the breath.

Sessions are held at Church Farm Country Cottages private swimming pool, which is warmer than a standard leisure centre pool. This makes it ideal for easing out stiff muscles, aches, pains and reducing the weight and pressure on sore joints.
